| Can anyone suggest a good book for playing swing & bebop lines on E9? I have a pretty good vocabulary of this type of improvising on standard guitar and the fretboard knowledge to transpose it to E9, but I thought a good book might save me some time hunting for optimum "fingering" positions. Thanks! |

I doubt if there is any such thing for actual bebop.The topic comes up here every once in a while. This was a pretty good thread -

You might find the stacked 4ths ideas in that thread somewhat useful, and Randy Beaves’ comment is gold.
Use your knowledge of 3- and 4- note voicings on 6-string, and chord synonyms like E9=Bm6=G#m7b5=Bb7b9+, and try to apply it. Some of the string grips seem foreign at first because closer voicings are often easier than more open ones. The real challenge is playing authentic-sounding bebop single note stuff on E9. I believe the Jim Loessburg stuff is for the C6 neck. The Bebop Bible is not specific to pedal steel. Neither is any of the Ted Greene material, which is available for free on his legacy website. Something tells me John is already aware of that kind of thing. Bebop for E9 material, good luck.

There's also a c6 book of transcriptions from Doug Jernigan, available from his site (which I haven't seen that book but I have a couple of others of his, very good material, the tab takes a little getting used to, w/pedal/lever notations at the bottom)

Bebop uses Flat 6 in the major scale - isn't it?
Learning that in three positions would be the first formal exercise. |
