Hi Formites-
I'm a huge fan of the Noel Boggs and Herb Remington small jazz combo records from the 50's and 60's where they play standards and old pop songs. (Examples: Noel Boggs Quintet, "Magic Steel Guitar," Herb Remington's "Steeling Dreams" and "Steeling Love."
Peewee Whitewing and Bobby & Larry Black had a band in California called the West Coast All Stars which played a lot of that stuff. Are there recordings?
I'm looking for any suggestions or info on more of these older recordings--also photos! I've heard there was quite a scene of these little combos in California during that time.

Here's a few. It's a very narrow category as you have defined it.
I’ve omitted a lot of “steel guitar instrumentals†of pop songs that are mostly by well-known players post 1970 and are either live performances or were released on CD by the individual steel player—such as Al Vescovo, Billy Robinson, Bobby Ingano, Buddy Emmons, Curley Chalker, Hal Rugg, Weldon Myrick, Doug Jernigan, etc.
Also omitted all the recordings Joaquin Murphey did with The Plainsmen and otherwise.
Excluded anything prior to the late 1940s, other than the Peck’s Bad Boys, which is from about 1942.
Felix Mendelssohn did a lot of great steel instrumental standards with Roland Peachey or Harry Brooker on steel, but I think it's before your specified era. Limehouse Blues, Caravan, Dinah, Saint Louis Blues, Cherokee, Lady Be Good, Japanese Sandman, etc.
I excluded anything with a vocal, anything that might be heard as “too country†(no "Detour", no Bob Wills or Milton Brown), or anything not a “standard†in the traditional sense--written pre-1950.
Offhand, I’m not aware of any LP or CD that collects this stuff, but I’d guess you could find at least half of it on Youtube.

The Hushpuppies with Billy Cooper; Lady Be Good; this might be a radio transcription. Ferlin Husky's band.
Hank Thompson with Bobby Garrett; Charmaine
Freddie Tavares with T. Texas Tyler band; Coquette; live radio
Freddie Tavares with Wade Ray band; South; live radio
Speedy West instrumentals with Tennessee Ernie Ford; Lover, Perdido, In The Mood, and South; all transcriptions
Wade Ray with Noel Boggs; Perdido; from the 1950s but unissued for 50 plus years.
Jack Mooney; Seven Come Eleven; Canadian; you should get his Canadian LP.
Mel Price with Gene Long; Sweet Georgia Brown; live radio
John Hughey; Back Home In Indiana; I think this may be a radio transcription from when he was with Slim Rhodes, maybe early 1960s.
Rico Turchetti; That Da Da Strain
Neil Livingston; Saint Louis Blues; unissued acetate circa 1950.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I do have most of the records mentioned, but will start with some of the youtube suggestions! I have a little quintet in Austin playing this stuff and love it so much I feel like I grew up in the wrong era so I'm always looking for role models!  |

Rose, Don't look at it that way, I'd say you are in the right era to bring music from an old era to a new one. I feel the same way, I missed a lot, but am able to enjoy the past and enjoy the present.

Long time. I know you play Jersey Bounce. Have you heard Hank Penny's version? Remington plays some nice stuff, maybe on B11 neck. Benny Garcia plays a killer break on guitar also.

You've probably heard this one, but there is a Billy Jack Wills recording of Caravan with Vance and Tiny playing a twin lead, but no solos.

Do you have the Jimmy Rivers and the Cherokee Cowboys recording (with Vance Terry), Brisbane Bop? It's a must have. It is almost all pop standards or jazz standards, including On The Alamo, Cherokee, Swedish Pastry, Tippin' In, Slow Boat To China, Back Bay Shuffle, A Smo-o-o-oth One, Hold It,After You've Gone, It's All Your Fault, Airmail Special, How High The Moon, It's A Sin To Tell A Lie. Thanks Rich, for the Hank Penny "Jersey Bounce"(love that guitar solo), and yes, I've studied that Billy Jack Wills version of "Caravan" with Vance Terry - nice twin melody and Vance plays some cool, rhythmic back-up parts. Brisbane Bop with Vance is one of my all-time favorite records! |
