I am in the process of purchasing a ZumSteel U-12. This is my first Zum steel. My question: is Bruce Zumsteg still building guitars? Are Zums still in production?

Thank you and apologies if this is a redundant question.

Congrats on your Zum! They are some of the finest steels ever made! I just got my second Zum, and it's a killer!

I believe Bruce Zumsteg retired from building full time about 5 years ago. Word has it, he (very rarely) builds a one off for a special recipient, but he doesn't accept orders.

Doug Earnest builds Stage One & Encore pedal steel guitars as licensed Zumsteel designs, but I believe he has a long backlog of orders and may or may not be taking additional orders at any given time.

I bought a used Zum S12U several years back and it was a very nice playing and sounding Steel. I have since sold it.
Some additional questions I wish I had asked before I bought some used Steels in my lifetime include:
Is set up to my Copedant? Can it be before I buy it?
Is the Vertical lever installed correctly (can I reach it while holding down the AB pedals) and does it lower all three B strings or just 1 or 2? I like to lower all 3 B's.
Does this Steel have tune-able splits? If not can they be installed?
Are there any visible blems?
Is there anything wrong with the legs/threads?
Is there any issue with the electronics/pickup?
What is the return policy in case it arrives and I don't like it?

Bruce isnt building, but may provide support. I can’t speak for Bruce, or what his current status is, but a while back I bought a used Zum,

Bruce answered questions, gave advice, and sold me some parts.

If he isn’t still providing support ( a man gets to retire at some point....) There are many guys who could help. I’d email Lynn Stafford.

Pete has some great questions. Another to consider is the height. Make sure you fit under the rear apron.

A Zum is a quality, precision instrument.

In an ideal world everybody deserves to get a new steel at least once in their lifetime, and Mr. King you deserve one more than most.
