During a solo,especially an up tempo one,I've found that if you have to think about what you're going play while playing it, it's too late.

This must be true. If a slow solo goes badly, it's obviously not technique - it's the brain not coming up with the goods. So I'm not sure that the speed of the music makes any difference, except as Paul says to make us falsely accuse our fingers.

Yeppir i listen as a 6 mos in beginner and sometimes get overwhelmed while trying to figure out a solo never thought about breaking it down that small before!!!!

When I was in high school way back in 1975, a better guitar player than me in school once said, "Speed is often dictated by knowing where you're going".
I interpret Paul's comment as sort of being the same. (But I could be wrong.) |

Very helpful advice. I do try to focus on short phrases when I'm learning something on mandolin or PSG. I guess I should shorten those phrases to 3-5 notes.
I sure wish I could afford that course. Still waiting for the $$ to flood in from the local gigs.  |
