Hi all,
First, the fine print.
This is a late 60’s/early 70’s Fender 400 Console steel (most pedal steel parts not included) selling for $550 - shipping included to lower 48. I'll knock $100 off for local pickup. PayPal only (cash if local). This instrument is sold as-is and all sales final.
No trades please.

If I follow up with a reply and don't receive a response from a prospective buyer within 24 hours of attempting to contact him/her, I'll move on to the next person on the list. I'll update the results of this process in the thread so it's clear what's going on. The instrument is already packed and ready to ship (including plastic and bubble wrap on the inside of the case to keep pieces from moving around and pink panther rigid foam surrounding the outside of the case under the cardboard). Shipping will occur ASAP following final transfer of PayPal funds to my bank account (most likely anywhere from overnight to 48 hours of your payment).
Alright, with that out of the way…let’s see what we have here!
About 5 years ago I bought 2 nearly identical Fender 400’s. After disassembly and a deep Naphtha solvent cleaning of all metal pieces on both (including the changers and tuning pegs) I combined parts from both (and built a couple knee levers with some odds and ends from the Home Depot hardware aisle) and made my Super Fender 400 which I regularly play today. What’s left is this Fender 400 console steel!
Anyone who’s played one of these will tell you the pickup sounds amazing, especially when run through some effects. The case is in surprisingly very good condition for an instrument of this age. The tone and volume pots have date stamps of 1965 & 1966 and there is no date written under the tuning tub so, as best as I can tell, it was either built in the late 60’s or early 70’s (the story goes Fender bought a boxcar load of these pots and used them for several years). Also interesting, Fender regularly reused serial numbers on these so they mean absolutely nothing in determining the date of manufacture.
On the minus side, it’s missing a wood screw on the volume/tone cover plate and another on the changer cover plate. One of the screws on the changer color plate is a different color than the rest. Some of the chrome string fingers have some discoloration which might be the beginning of rust? It's missing the fancy Fender "F" changer cover plate. You can see these issues in the pictures below.
It’s currently tuned to “high C6â€, so low string to high:
A-C-E-G-A-C-E-G
Note: there are almost NO pedal steel specific parts included (other than the original changer and pedal kick board) so if you wanted to convert this back into one, you’d need to locate pedals, pedal rods, cables, a pulley block, turnbuckles, bellcranks, etc. The good news is this is an amazing sounding C6 console steel as it is and after playing it you may never want to convert it back into a pedal steel!
