I have been down with a bad case of the shingles since a few days, spending most of my time on my bed. I took a biography of Alex Chilton from my shelf and I read that Jeff Newman played on his sessions for a planned album release after his Box Tops days. No record company wanted to release it at the time so it came out about 15 years later.

Joachim, I trust you're over it soon, and thanks for sharing this song. Alex and Big Star were great and I can see them sliding this kind of song in there.

Thanks for your empathy Joe and Mike. Yes it is not as bad as it started a week ago. The reading of the book helps a little to turn my mind onto something else. Mike this song was recorded shortyly before they formed Big Star.

Around the same time Chris Bell was experimenting with pedal steel on this proto Big Star recording. I don’t know who the player was - it’s pretty out of tune.

It’s kind of a shame they didn’t take steel guitar forward into those Big Star records but I guess you can’t have everything.

Thanks for the tracks guys. I enjoy Alex and Big Star too. I had no idea that they were trying out PSG on their tunes. I did get to see Alex on a solo gig around here. Early 1980's I think. Just acoustic guitar and vocals. He was crooning a version of Volare', but Alex was not having his best evening on that occasion. I thought he might fall off the bandstand. I was working as a restaurant cook at that time, and I had heard that he was a restaurant dishwasher in New Orleans... so I felt a bit sad for him because he was so talented. But I suppose that's an old story in the lives of many talented musicians.
May that case of shingles pass quickly, Joachim.

Nice find, Joachim - great to hear Jeff on a third party commercial project.
Sincerely hope you're feeling better. I had shingles a few years ago and it was like being wrapped in barbed wire 24/7. |

To be wrapped in barbed wire, thats how it feels sometimes, Frank. But I believe a pharmacist gave me the right painkillers today. Ths stuff is called Pregabalin, and since i took I feel relieved. Thanks for the other well wishes also.

I met Alex during his dishwasher days, and he may not have been at his best at that time.
I later learned that he was intentionally taking a break from music. He found himself as a young adult having never held a job outside of playing music, and thought he needed to experience something different.
I think a filmmaker is working on a documentary of Alex. Check out “the troubled men†podcast, it features that topic on one podcast.
An interesting guy to say the least. He is missed by those that knew him. I wish I had gotten to know him better.
I’m told the first time he walked in to a recording studio he was 16 , and cut “the letterâ€

Gary I don't have that album, I only read about it in the biography. There's a mention of adrummer named Richard Rosebruogh, and he most probably played on the cut.

Doesn't the song has a nice bridge, Mike? I've only came to appreciate it after a few listens. Alex was a good songwriter.
