Quick question! I've just finished my ten-string console lap-steel build, and I was all set to get to grips (excuse the pun) with C6th tuning, having played E6th on my 6 and then 8-string laps for several years.
Alas, C6 isn't working for me so I'll be returning to my E6th comfort zone asap.
There's a pile of tuning options in past posts on the Forum,
but almost all for eight string.
So the question!
Is there a definitive ten-string E6 tuning?
I was even considering a regular E6 set-up on the bottom 8, and then doing something akin to the pedal steel F# and D# on strings one and two.... advice needed. String gauge suggestions would also be handy, as I'll have to make up a set for sure. Thanks in advance.

Chromatic strings could be a nice option but I’d lean towards adding low notes. _________________ Kevin Maul: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Decophonic, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

I’ve thought of just what you said, adding F# and D# to your E6.
L-H
E B E G# B C# E G# D# F#
Or above change Str 9 to D, more like Jules Ah See C13
E D E G# B C# E G# D# F#
Or the E9 pedal steel tuning
B D E F# G# B E G# D# F#
Or a more C6 approach to have a 4 chord
L-H
E A C# E G# B C# E G# F#
This would have melodic and chord advantages.
Depends on on what kind of music you intend to play. Naturally.

I am using E13/9 but consider it a glorified E6 tuning. Spelled BDEF#G#BC#EG#F#. Its a variation of the Morrell E13. Sort of Don Helms,Leon, and Morrell combo. After lots of consideration I am staying with this. Snappy, bright, cuts through mix, lots of interval there for swing, jazz and country, and more. Mike Neer had a really cool E9 tuning that is interesting. Could simplify it and maybe use a Maj 7 or dom 7th somewhere. Or just E6 extension. I went with 13th to get more jazz/swing opportunities. |

All three replies very much appreciated, tuning suggestions noted and lined up for a long day of experimenting.
SGF to the rescue once again! |
