Black ‘65 wraparound #2009

A lot of that tone was in Randy’s hands and heart. I played that guitar several times, even recording tracks with it right beside those that Randy had recorded using the same chain, and what I did sounded nothing like what he had done. Night and day difference Crying or Very sad

Conversely, he played several guitars of mine and sounded like himself.

This is a photo I took the last time I saw Randy. I talked him into sitting in for a few songs at Martinez Hall near San Antonio. He is playing "Rosie", who once belonged to his dear friend Dicky Overbey:

Randy was one of the most gifted musicians I have ever known. His piano playing was exemplary as well. I miss him greatly.

Rick Price just texted me. He said Randy died two years ago yesterday. He said Randy's son, in Missouri, has the guitar.

Tommy Detamore just told everyone the facts. Any guitar is gonna sound like whoever plays it. The actually voice of an instrument really gets down to nitpicking. The magic is in the musicians hands.
Tommy Detamore is an awesome player and so was Randy. I spent all day one Saturday engineering an entire Western swing album with Randy playing that black wrap-a-round and also playing the piano. I played his wrap-around and I sounded like me.
Back to the question asked I also wonder what happens to instruments. The most interesting story was by Johnny Cox witnessing the Touch My Heart PP that became a children's play wagon.

That guitar did have some magic though. I have only played a couple that had it. Bobby Flores has one too. It's killer. I miss Randy he was a special guy.

Agreed: it shows balance with fullness, guts, and substance.

Thanks for the link.

Bobby Flores' wraparound is #2185, a 1965 D-10 that was originally owned by Bill Johnson. Bill was Marty Robbins' steel player in the mid-late 60's and played the solo on "The Shoe Goes On the Other Foot Tonight," one of Marty's more country sounding hits.

Herb,

Now that we are on those old Emmons guitars

Is Jim Loessberg's Emmons around that era as well ? 65?

That guitar has a very unique sound to me as well, very transparent ,

Jim's guitar was serialized in May of 1965.

My knowledge comes from having owned both Bobby's and Jim's guitars prior their receiving them. Likewise Dicky Overbey's "Rosie," a 1966 bolt-on, and Lynn Stafford's woodneck 1164008.

It seems that Rick Price and I had our hands in distributing more than a few 64-67 era Emmonses in the past 15 years or so. I'm aware of at least 6 or 7 wraparounds in the Austin/San Antonio area.

I'm assuming these instruments were passed only to those in possession of diamond horseshoe rings and knowledge of the proper secret handshake...

Cool
