Each one has a slightly different sound and texture. It's all in what each person prefers. Consider picking a pedal that does many types of reverb sounds, like the TC Electronics Arena Reverb.

If you want a definition of reverberation how about this:
When you make a sound in an enclosed space, it bounces around like a ball* in a squash court until it eventually gets absorbed. That is reverberation. Of course you can add other effects (such as delay and pitch shift), but that process of decay is what puts the music in a space.
*more like an infinite number of microscopic ones
