Does anyone know if a 3rd string (G#) can be raised to a Bb without it breaking?

I use a 0.20 plain and already lower it the F#.

There is a lick on the intro on a Midland song called “Lonely For You Only” and I am sure it uses a full tone raise on that string...

6th string I can believe, and that raises a whole tone without breaking!

Yeah, if you mean string 6, it's fine. I sometimes raise it a whole tone on a KL.

Yes, on my universal tuning, pedal 7 raises string 6, G# to Bb.
I use a plain .020 with no problems. I also lower it to F# on a knee lever.

How about this.......

G# to A with B pedal, and a further raise to a B ?

Is that possible?

Probably just the once I reckon before it breaks?

David, I got that exact change on my guitars (G#-B raise) on the 6th string. It's great and definitely a keeper. You get a unison note with the 5th string and a whole lot of fun lick type stuff. When you engage this raise-to-B lever in the E lower/B pedal postion (Bb mode), you eliminate the dominant 7th sound from the chord and make it regular major chord and can lever in back and forth between dominant/major. I read somewhere a while back that Paul Franklin used this change for a while (I may be mistaken).
I have it on RKL. the 6th string will raise without breaking no problem, you could probably even go up another half tone to C without breaking (use eye protection if trying this.) The 3rd string G# raise up to B would probably be the breaking one.

I have that change on my 0 lever, to the left of my "A" pedal. Several uses:

1) use 0 and A together, two get a II9 chord, with strings 4 and 8 providing b7 (or slide down two frets for a I9). lots of melodic passing phrase possibilities.

2) Makes a nice melodic move between strings 7 and 5, especially when your open position is functioning as a IV chord.

3) What Jacek was describing with the Es lowered. If you use it together with the A pedal, it replicates pedal 7 on the C6 neck.

I’ve had it on a verticle knee on several guitars(6th G# - B) Paul Franklin has used the raise for as long as I can recall. No string breakage.

OK guys, 6th string raises to B with no problems, but what about raising 3rd string G# up to B? That is the final frontier and I haven't seen anyone do that yet. Could it be possible? maybe with a lower gauge string (wimpy tone though), or soldered string wraps? Some other stronger string material like titanium?

It might be fun to try, but to be honest I'm kinda tired of messing with my setup, I'd rather just play.

Before I'd try that change, I'd plenty of spare strings on hand. Whoa!

I would tune the entire PSG down a half-note if I ever wanted to raise 3d string two half-notes. In "E" I am happy with being able to lower 3d string two half-notes along with 6th string.
