We've lost a whole host of pets over the years Micky, and you know only too well the pain and heartbreak that the loss of a pet brings. Diana and I rescue elderly dogs because rescue homes have real problems re-homing old animals. Our previous dog was 17 when I had to take that gruelling trip to the vet. Our current dog was sourced from Battersea, and she has just 2 teeth left. She is a bundle of fun, and sticks to my wife like a shadow.

Mickey,

I’m so sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you. We have a 12 year old Cairn Terrier who’s diabetic and has a type of cancer called mast cell disease. A week ago I thought I was going to have to write a post like yours because he was in hospital with ketoacidosis so bad that I had made an appointment with an at home pet hospice to come out and do what had to be done. I’m so thankful that the Lord and Good Saint Francis heard our prayers but we know it’s only a reprieve. I had a taste of the anguish you’re feeling now.

I truly believe that the Almighty has a place for all of his creation and that someday we’ll be united with our fur babies again.

Ken, it’s so wonderful that you open your home and hearts to senior rescue pups!

Peace and prayers,

Skeeter.

Mickey , so sorry for your loss. I have a 13 year old chocolate lab, who is starting to have issues. She is one the best little souls I’ve ever known.
Sorry man.

Micky. We lost our Winston about three years ago and I'll never be the same. I too am confident, along with many big name preachers, that they'll be waiting for us in heaven. As Billy Graham said when asked, "Yes, why wouldn't a loving God do that for us". Ron

Nothing is as loyal as a family pet, IMO. I've lost 2 rescue dogs from cancer. As you say, one day they're fine, then there's an appetite problem followed by the dead-end diagnosis. I stayed with each through the end, and that is a tough thing to do. I've never made it out of the vet's office without streaming tears, so my heart goes out to you and your pet.

You may not want to hear this now, but I speak from tough experience. Somewhere close by there's a dog that could benefit from your love and care, and they're as unique in their own way as all dogs are... not a replacement, for sure, but there's joy in having a companion like a dog... so my advice is to look toward picking up a new pal soon.

I am woefully sorry for your loss, though.

Jeff

Thanks guys for your mention of my Tommy. He was a one off. Ken Byng...hat's off to you and Diane for all you do. On saturday the Vet said "This won't take long" He put the needle in and said "He's going to sleep"....gave me enough time for me to Hug Tommy and tell him I loved him...Then he was gone. I am broken hearted....God Bless him...he's crossed the rainbow bridge. Sad

The playing of God when we have our animals put to sleep is always a painful process for any animal lover. If you know your pet, you will always know when it’s that time. It’s usually when the pet’s quality of life is not what it should be. Our last dog, Benji, was euthanised by his favourite lady vet who he trusted in his last months. Bearing in mind that he was a very old man with a number of ailments, both the vet and I were united that Benji had reached the end of his days. He had outlived both of his previous owners, but settled in with Diana and I within 10 minutes or so and gave us 5 wonderful years of unconditional love.

Two years ago we lost our William. He had cancer that had gradually worsened. His last few months, though, were pain-free thanks to a mixture of pain pills - his appetite returned and he seemed his old self, loving life and running around again.

Suddenly, though, he had a relapse and, in a matter of hours, he became listless and was clearly in pain. Poor William - they can have no idea what's happening to them, can they?

As I had left days earlier to go off on my Summer gig (2500 miles away) Susie had to deal with it alone. The vet told her that William's organs had shut down which is why he could no longer take his medicines. The vet gave him a pain-killing shot and William visibly relaxed. He was at peace and Susie could spend twenty minutes petting him and saying goodbye. A second injection and William went to sleep.

We like to think that his last moments erased the memory of the pain he'd suffered in that last night

Two years later and William's spirit is still here in our house. We found another 'rescue' dog - our six-year-old Hazel - and I'd encourage you to look for another best friend sooner rather than later. We'd have no proper home without a dog to share our lives.

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy, Micky.

Micky I'm sorry. They are family.

When I lost my previous Aussie I created a word document "I remember Razz" and listed her great traits, quirks, behavior and special moments. I found that it helped the mourning process. I hope that this helps you too.

MY BEST FRIEND©
Written by: Gary Watkins and Bill Shaffer

You look at me with love and trust and it tears me up
You’ve been my best friend since we were both just a pup
I can’t say that it won’t hurt and I won’t pretend
I’ll miss you more than you know, cause you’re my best friend

People think I’m foolish for acting this way
They don’t understand what I’m trying to say
I’ve been through some hard times I thought would never end
But you were there to see me through cause you’re my best friend

I’ve got to set you free from the pain you’re going through
One last ride down the road and you don’t have a clue
To keep you hanging on like this would only be a sin
To some you act just like a dog but to me you’re my best friend

Sometimes I’d be gone for days and you’d be all alone
You would act just like a kid when I finally got home
Looking back on your life makes me start to grin
My life’s been better because you here and you were my best friend

The vet says it’s almost over and it’s tearing me apart
My eyes are burning, it’s hard to breathe and there’s a pain in my heart
You lay your head on my leg to say this is not the end
You’ll wait for me at heaven’s gate cause you’re my best friend

I’ve got to set you free from the pain you’re going through
One last ride down the road and you don’t have a clue
To keep you hanging on like this would only be a sin
To some you act just like a dog but to me you’re my best friend
To keep you hanging on like this would only be a sin
To some you act just like a dog but to me you’re my best friend
