I should know this but my brain is not working too well.
If, say on a standard 6 string guitar....I wanted more string tension, read less floppy 6th string tuned to the same note, would I go to a heavier or lighter wound 6th?
Example... for comparison purposes: String 6 currently tuned to E with a 42, go to 38 or 46? |

You may wanna read this article about the string gauges Pete Townshend used over the years. He didn't ( for a period of time) seem to like the unwound third, as most of his contemporaries prefered back then.

Thanks Joachim. Interesting reading. It was just a generic thought concerning tension v. gauge. I just couldn't get my head around the tension thing concerning the wound strings.
I shoulda known from experiencing putting on larger gauge plain strings on the pedal steel, but it just wasn't registering. I think I have it now though.
I'll be setting up a B tuned baritone standard 6 string from scratch shortly so I was thinking about what gauges to use. I got some helpful info from Scott @ Stringjoy too, so I should be all set. Thanks again all. |

I thought for sure he would mention that windmilling on an unwound 3rd probably didn’t work out well. |
