Terry was at my house today. I told him there was a good picture of him posted on the Steel Guitar Forum by Bill Dobkins. Excellent picture of a good guy, and a hall of fame steel player. |

There is a soulful quality to Terry's playing that I really love. He has that elusive compelling sound like Jimmy Day. _________________ Bob |

Terry is undoubtedly one of the greats of all time. His pedal work is amazing. Just when you think he's through he gets a little more. I absolutely love his versions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "We Could", especially. Beautiful chord work.
One of my favorite people and also one of my favorite players. _________________ Ray Harrison

Bill; Thank you for posting the excellent photo of Terry. I agree with all of you on Terry's title of a great steel guitarist. His style and tone sound so fabulous, as always. I loved it when he played with Mel. I know I will never capture his fine talent, so guess I will have to stay in Cousin Jody's category..Cheers..Bernie _________________ 2007 Zum S-10; 1967 Sho-Bud [ D-10 ]; 85 S-10 Sierra; 1953 Multi-Kord [ 6 String- 4 pedals ] A Sho-Bro six String Resonator Guitar; Nashville 112 Amp; hilton Vol. Pedal |

"If" you want to hear some great beautiful steel guitar go to "The Steel Guitar Network" and listen to Terry play "If". I wish I knew how to post it here. If someone can do that it would be great.

Hey Jerry, Have not been able to listen to reference song (If). Would that by chance be the old song by
Marvin McCollough (Spelling?) of the old KWHN radio
days called (If Is A Mighty Big Word) A great song and a very great singer, just had his promblems. Saw him several times in those days and a great showman.
Sure wish I could get a copy of that album. Thanks, J.R. |

J. R. It is currently the number 9 song listed. It is about as nice as any thing you will hear on steel guitar.
I hope it works so you can hear it.

wanted to revive this thread since we lost the great Terry Bethel yesterday. I didn't get to know him, my great loss, but I'm always impressed by how highly everyone who knew him speaks of him. and so very impressed with his playing.
I was lucky enough to see him play in St. Louis and I'll never forget his solo rendition of Over The Rainbow which had the undivided attention of everyone in that big ballroom.
you can hear his recorded version on youtube featuring the same photo that started this thread. thanks Bill Dobkins! https://youtu.be/ojZisYjgP3s
here's the David Gates/Bread song "If" that was mentioned above, live in Knoxville: https://youtu.be/Qa4uxZ9etY0
and here's some great live footage of Terry with Mel Tillis playing Good Woman Blues, which was the last song he recorded with Mel from 1976. it was a number one hit!
https://youtu.be/cNpI-ZiqG7I
thanks for the music and all the inspiration, Terry. I hope others will chime in with stories and memories to celebrate the life of this steel guitar legend. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

Few years ago when Tillis came through I contacted Terry and he replied to come introduce my self and go out for a coffee.
I didn't want to bother him....boy wish I would have followed through and had a sit down. |

Here's a pic or two of Terry playing at the Australian Steel guitar show in Brisbane last year ...a great privilege to finally get to meet him and play with him too
The guy on the keyboards is Milt Quackenbush who worked with Terry in the Mel Tillis band for many years.

I enjoyed hearing Terry play at the Brisbane Festival.
Paddy, I love how you can play steel and take photos at the same time!
