.
I found him a few years back.
He is the reason I started making cigar box guitars.
Interesting guy and an excellent musician.

I'm getting a bit concerned about the lack of conversation on the No Peddlers lately. It looks like most of the posts lately are about dating specific steels. I hope that isn't a bad sign for this section going forward.

Ah well,

Hopefully people are spending more time shedding or gigging.

Hi Bill,

I am afraid I am inclined to agree with you.
Being a lap steel player, and a bad one, I pretty much feel like an outcast in here.
I am not a professional.
I don't record much of what I play.
I just love the lap steel.
I didn't discover the instrument until I was 72.
I am now 75 and am still as confused as I was since I first discovered it.
I think this site is directed mainly at pedal steel players.
That's fine.
I couldn't play one of those things if you threatened me with death.
I come in here to get a hint or a tidbit that will help me in my efforts to play this plank of wood.
So far so good.
I have learned a lot in here. I have also felt like a 2nd class citizen because this site is directed at the pedal steel player.
That is also fine. It is a needed venue.
I just wish lap steel players had the same opportunity.
I have found nothing out there that equates to this site.
b0b has created the best site I have found for information on the steel guitar. Pedal or otherwise.
I also enjoy the camaraderie that is prevalent in here.

Well, it's summer and hopefully more of us are spending more time outside, and not at our computers.

Thanks for posting that, Bill. I especially like his version of "The Parting Glass", with some of the pull-offs and hammer-ons having that bag-pipe-like rhythm. One of my regular touring gigs has been with a Celtic performer where, among other instruments, I play my old National Tri-cone. Those "pipe-like" moves can fit so well in Irish and Scottish styles.

We may be a rare breed of players, but the versatility of these "planks of wood" we're addicted to can be pretty awesome.

What is the unusual looking tone bar he uses on that song?

Larry, pedal steel players need a support group!

I really like Justin’s Lap Steel work. As for this board, it seems that there’s a lot more happening on Facebook in the Lap Steel Lunatics group. However this place remains a fabulous resource, and source of expert advice when needed.

Wow that is awesome playing.
That ironing board steel would be so much fun to play.
This site really has kept me playing my non-pedal and my pedal steels.
I have gained so much good with the lap steel sections as well as the pedal steel sections.
I am grateful for all there is available on here and many other sites also.
Thinking back in the 50's through the 80's I couldn't seem to find much for information or help out here in the middle of Eastern Montana. I relied mostly on all my old Oahu tab music.
Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Lap steel is so great for so many genres.

Ah well,

I tend to agree with what is said here, I try to post a new piece every month, but it gets little attention compared to a Poll about something or other or a discussion about Chords we will never understand in a month of Sundays.

I have a YouTube Video collection of Steel & Dobro over 140 Videos, here are a couple of reminders...........

But if there is little interest I will just stop and do something else.

I think I have listened and have enjoyed and have been inspired by everything James has played. I have searched for his stuff.
I certainly indeed thank you James.

Justin's been discussed on the forum periodically - e.g.,

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=290597

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=307599

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=309340

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=304362

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=296704

I personally like the fact that he heavily blurs the distinctions between steel guitar and slide guitar, as does David Lindley and honestly, quite a few others. But that probably is off-putting for some here, who basically treat slide guitar as a totally different instrument, and definitely "not a steel guitar".

Smorgasbord of his instruments and playing here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0PoHkHOSKA

For me, slide, lap/console steel, and pedal steel are all on a continuum, and all very closely related at a lot of levels. Death to silos! Evil Twisted

Bill, I've been on this BB for 20 years. Conversations and people come and go. There are intense periods, boring periods, fun and exciting periods - just like life. Overall and over time, this place has remained much more positive than negative, much more interesting and useful than not, and the best-moderated music-focused forum on the web.

So we are both old timers. Anyway, this is not the topic of this post.

Sorry if I hijacked your original post Bill, I just got caught up in the other thing you said.

But I like Justin too, he is very helpful and explains a lot of things he is engaged in.

It's all good. I like Justins concept and his instruments. I do watch and appreciate the posts by James Kerr and love his music. Same with Kay Das. Once in awhile I need to eat and practice. Imagine that.

What I would like to see is more input from the hundreds of Players here who never let us hear anything, I think I am right in saying YouTube provide all you need to make a wee Movie. If its lack of a Backing Track, ask me and I will send you for free anything you ask for if I still have it (and my list goes way back)I can't read or write Music or Tabs being self taught, but if you think I have something you would like, then just ask, I will help anyone along the road.

The first tune does not strike me as anything special. The second one is nice in a kind of Irish way. It’s a pretty cool looking and sounding instrument.
