I can’t figure out the insides.
What are the hinged panels/sections under the lid?

I believe the back folds down into the seat and then the lid closes on top of it

that is the hinges that hook to the back rest that folds up and down.. fold it down and close the lid. Its a hide away back rest that doesn't get in your way while carrying .

Dan, this is a pretty cool design but your pictures do not do it justice. Take another from the front side, slightly above, it will put it in perspective. Plus, I see what the leather straps are for but don't think you need them. It would look better with out.
