Disclaimer. This is just my humble opinion:

New:

1) Cinesmith
2) Clinesmith
3) Clinesmith

Vintage:

1) Rickenbacker B7 (Pre-war)
2) Fender Dual Professional
3) Fender Stringmaster (preferable mid-late 50s w/ Tele 3-way switch, NOT the pushbuttons)

I have an '41 Epiphone Century 8 string and a '48 blonde Console Grande 8/7. I still want a Clinesmith and a 30's EH-150 7 string.

I love my National D8's and if I was looking for something else I would be afraid of buying it and it not coming up to the mark as far as playability and tone are concerned. Got myself a Ricky 8-10-8 and didn't like it so it just sits in it's case.

However a Remington stringmaster or an Excel Jerry Bird so long as it does not sound like a Fender. Whoa!
