| The blonde Jedson lap steel (lot # 8 ) appears to be the one he toured with for years before replacing it with a Fender DeLuxe 6. Of the half dozen (pretty cool) steels listed, that one would seem to have the most player's provenance. |

Yes, he seems to be talking about his Fender 1000 here but all the pictures I've seen of it show it with the pedals removed and only strung with 6 strings per neck (which I suppose is what he means by "making a 6 string slide").
Not seen (or heard evidence of) him playing with pedals. |

Just because an instrument was once owned by a famous musician doesn't make it any better. I once played a guitar that had been previously been owned by Eric Clapton. It didn't make me play any better, or sound like him.

Agreed.
There's been a lot of discussion about the auction on the rock/metal forum over at Ultimate Guitar. Most of us agree that Gilmour's pieces will mostly be bought by wealthy fans/collectors and locked away in glass cases rather than actually played. This is not going to be an auction for starving musicians to pick up one of Gilmour's Strats

i'm almost certain he never played pedal steel on any recordings. When I first heard Dark Side of the Moon I thought his work on Breathe and Great Gig were pedal. Turns out it was just alternate tunings with volume swells. I just found the ZB an odd item that he would of even have really.

Remember that the big auction houses often charge up to a 25% "buyer's premium" on the hammer price. So if the hammer price is 2 grand, the buyer would actually have to pay $2500 for the item. The sellers also pay a commission to the auction house for the sale that covers advertising, insurance, and auctioneer's fees. As a result, the auction houses do pretty well on most sales!  |

Ya, after saying an 8 string neck had too many strings to deal with, it is strange that he'd go out and get a 10 string ZB. I notice the description says the ZB is circa '77 so maybe he intended to learn some moves and use it on Animals, or The Wall but never got the hang of pedal steel - wouldn't be the first time a great guitarist bailed on pedal steel right 
I also notice his interview mentioned BJ Cole coming over to his house, I wonder if he took any pedal steel lessons from BJ?
Too bad that 'Dark Side of the Moon' Fender 1000 wasn't on the block. That would have serious collector value

$300,000 for the lowly Jedson lap.
The Black Strat $3,975,000 (highest guitar ever sold at auction)
I think he raised over $22,000,000

I wonder how much of the super high bidding was due to the fact that the instruments were owned by David Gilmour. Are there that many wealthy Pink Floyd/Gilmour fans? Or is it the fact that the money is going to Client Earth...a charity to help save the planet for our children and grandchildren? Either way, I'm happy that the auction was so successful. I bid on Nash Tele. As a non-celebrity owned instrument, it was worth about $1500. It realized $60,000. Doh! BTW, I wasn't the successful bidder  |
