I'm hearing 15th fret, lower 5th string a whole tone, play strings 4 & 5 then release. Repeat. |

Sounds like a 'Franklin' pedal drop on the middle strings to me. _________________ Roger Rettig - Emmons D10s, Quilter TT-12, B-bender Teles and old Martins.

Hey guys, I am probably wrong...but it seemed to me that Marty did an album with the great Ralph Mooney around this time period. Could be that the "Moon" was cutting this track with him. I don't know about the entire album, but if you listen closely to the moves on the pedals it sounds like something that "Moon" may have done. He was very creative, but still had a distinctive sound didn't he? A legend on Pedal Steel!! Roger |

Josh, I have pedal that lowers my 5th string a half step. Releasing it quickly gives a similar effect. If it lowered a full step, it would sound just like what I'm hearing in that track. I haven't tried a Franklin pedal, but I bet that's what it is. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Fred was touring in Shooter Jennings’s band a couple of years ago, playing a GFI I believe. |

Sounds like Marty and his Telecaster with "bender" changes. I heard him on a recent show and he nailed Mooney pedal steel licks with it. _________________ GFI Ultra Keyless S-10 with pad (Black of course) TB202 amp, Hilton VP, Steelers Choice sidekick seat, SIT Strings

yea theres some guitar in there too... the thing is is that it is most definitely a minor third down... which could be a pedal and a half step move with the bar... and the harmony up top COULD be an open string.... i haven't got back to it but I did find A WAY to play it but i sure dont think its HIS WAY.

truthfully it was hard to tell if its even a pedal steel. it COULD be a guitar with a bender on it for sure.. thats part of the reason I was asking.. it doesn't quite sound like a regular steel... the range seems low so it might be a guitar sort of thing... |

I don't think it's his B Bender. There's some parts (like the first and last lick) where you can obviously hear the slide. Also a different tonality.......plus there's live footage of them playing it, and Kenny Vaughn takes a solo, sounding nothing like the record (even though Marty is playing Clarence)
I think it's steel, with some open strings in the licks and the change bOb describes. |

On second listen, yeah there is some obvious slide. The song is G, the open strings I’m hearing are G and D. Most E9’s can do that; only a high-strung Tele can. The song is very Waylon, and his long time steeler Robby Turner is listed in the credits. It’s probably him. There’s only one Tele player in the known universe that can play slide and B-bend like we’re hearing on this tune, but his name isn’t on the list.

Sounds like Tele's to me.
The recording wasn't mono-checked. The guitar disappears if not in stereo. _________________ ShoBud The Pro 1

99% sure it's a b bender. You can hear it fly past the center as it pans back to it's left position after the solo. RP _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |

If Fred Treece is correct and this is Will Ray playing then that answers the question. Will has a G&L Signature model B-Bender guitar AND plays with finger "slide rings" (sometimes on both hands). Not something most of us can do - but I think that could be what's going on.
