Merle dies of double pneumonia on, yes his Birthday April 6th. He was 79. He did have Lung Cancer and I believe a lung removed in 2008.
Mel Street also Died on his Birthday as he took his own life at 43 on his Birthday of October 21; just like his Dad did.

Merle was prolific as a singer and writer of country music, far surpassing previous hugely successful singer-songwriter artists such as Jimmie Rogers, Hank Williams, and even Willie Nelson. It is said that at the time of his death, he had an archive of 300-400 unreleased songs. Whether or not they will wind up being be as popular or successful as the ones he sang and released while he was living is doubtful. Music tastes have changed, and popular music today seems of a far more superficial nature. To me, anyway. |

Anyone know what happened to the archive? Chuck Campbell told me he grew up in the same hollow as Mel in West Virginia. |

I'm sure Merle was from Oklahoma and, he and his family, moved from there to California during the dust bowl days.

Donny wonders whether any of those unreleased songs will materialize. Probably not. For instance, Tchaikovsky wrote some of the greatest music ever, but also a lot of rubbish which is thankfully forgotten. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Bio info on web has him born in Oildale, California, 1937.
If you read his bio on Wikipedia, go to the “early life sectionâ€: Holy moly,
Merle had a life that provided as much material for country western music as all the rest of them combined! _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

That may be true, but unlike days of yore, the only thing being sold-pushed-hawked these days is the artist; their image. It's all about looks and personality. The actual songs they sing are rather inconsequential and unimportant.
(And this is why you seldom see old grey-hairs or fat people on the Billboard pop or country charts.) |

I agree that the actual musical content is close to zero. But then doesn't every generation make the same complaint about the next? I wonder what Merle Haggard was criticised for not doing! _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Merle Haggard's song:
When My Last Song is Sung.
When my last song is sung
And my life’s work is done
And my old faithful guitar loses tone
You won’t find me troubled then
Wishin’ I could sing again
When my last song is sung I’ll be gone. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

If you want to see a great Bio on Merle This is it. I was fortunate to record this when my local PBS station aired it.
AMERICAN MASTERS
Merle Haggard: Learning to Live with Myself
Season 24 Episode 3 | 1h 23m
American Masters' documentary about the country music legend Merle Haggard, often called "the poet of the common man," features interviews with comrades and fellow musicians including Robert Duvall, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, Keith Richards, Tanya Tucker, and Dwight Yoakam. The people with whom he was raised - his juvenile delinquency and incarcerations - still inform his creativity. _________________ Zum SD-12 Black, Zum SD-12 Burly Elm Several B-Bender Tele's and a lot of other gear I can't play.
