Last night (Fri. May 3) Laney Hicks was on the Larry
black reunion and introduced by Charlie McCoy. My
what a great singer. I found her on the internet in
an interview with husband Russ and they spoke about a
gospel album. Then I found her on youtube with
Buddy Emmons and she mentioned an album with him.
Now my question - are these CDs available and where?
Thanks. Bill

Laney is a wonderful singer and wonderful friend of mine! Back in 2006, I had the opportunity to play steel with Laney at the Southern Steel Guitar Convention, which, at the time, was in Saluda, South Carolina. I played steel while she sang one of her favorite Connie Smith songs, "Once A Day". She had recorded a song with Buddy Emmons called "A Love Like This/Nameless Shuffle" in 2004. I think the steel Buddy used on that record was a JCH with ten strings on one neck and twelve strings on the other. I think it was one of the last few steels Jimmie Crawford built before he died. "Nameless Shuffle" might have been the only song she'd recorded with Buddy.

I found this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=a+love+like+this+lyrics&oq=A+Love+Like+this&aqs=chrome.1.0l6.2558j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I checked out the video. Boy, that Buddy Emmons sure ruined pedal steel didn't he, judging from who really got the applause when he came on....

Okay. Not really familiar with it (beyond Emmons' playing).

Brett, I'm pretty sure the JCH that Jimmie Crawford built for Buddy Emmons had 10 strings on the E9th neck and 11 strings on the C6 neck. I'll double check it just to be sure. I saw that guitar at Jimmie's place in various stages as he was building it. Laney Hicks is a great singer. She recorded some play along cd's with her singing some classic C&W songs with an example of Russ Hicks playing the first take and then no steel on the second one so you could play along with it. I wish I could get my hands on some of those again, they were really fun to play along with.

here you go Bill:

A LOVE LIKE THIS

Still feels like yesterday, you turned and looked my way
A new romance we couldn't quite resist
You said no guarantees, my skeptic heart agreed
Who'd think that we would find a love like this

Now anything I do means nothing without you
When we're apart my lonely heart knows you're its happiness
And lying next to me is where you want to be
Who'd think that we would find a love like this

Life's greatest mystery is clear to you and me
It's hand in hand, one girl one man, it's one true lover's kiss
It's knowing every day this feeling's here to stay
Who'd think that we could find a love like this
Who'd believe that we could find a love like this

She was almost a regular at Scotty's Convention when she still was with Russ. Such a sweet lady and one of the greatest singers. I think she would have made it if she had pursued a professional musical career.

Kind Regards, Walter

In 2004, when I played my very first steel guitar show in Hollonville, Georgia, Laney was there. We'd became friends at the ISGC in 2003, and we started talking on the internet. In 2006, Laney and I were having a little discussion in email about how we'd like to play a song onstage together, so in November 2006, we decided to play a song at the Southern Steel Guitar Convention, which was in Saluda, South Carolina at the time. We decided to play one of Laney's favorite Connie Smith songs, "Once A Day", so I'd practiced playing the steel parts a few months prior to the show. At the show, Tommy Dodd and I did our regular set, and after we finished, Laney came onstage, and sang while I played steel-it was such an amazing experience!
