It's said to be Vance with the Billy Jack Wills band, possibly with Rusty Draper sitting in on standard guitar.
Also on the flip side "Hot Rod Rag".
I have no idea if all of that is true or how/if it has been documented.
If true, I'd expect it was done at the KFBK studios in Sacto, rather than at 4 Star in Pasadena.
Makes some sense. The record was released in early 1954 when the Wills band was in Sacto and as far as I know Westmoreland lived in Sacto in the 50s and 60s, where he was a fixture on local radio and had the "Detour Inn" saloon.
Draper was based in San Francisco in the early 50s. So it's all possible, but I can't say it's confirmed. Nor do I know why it's even alleged to be Rusty on guitar.
Purely going by style, it does sound like Vance and I think someone is working over an electric mandolin. Who better at that than Tiny? |

Mitch Drumm, glad that you're still on top of this stuff! Hope you're doing well. You should team up with Steve Hathaway and write the definitive book on Western Swing so the info doesn't disappear.
Certainly could be Vance Terry.
Thanks,
Joe |
