Great post Bryan, I’ve enjoyed more than a few episodes of your podcast. I’d love to read a follow up post about HOW you’re manipulating the sound to achieve the desired percussive and bass sounds. What pedals are you using, EQ settings, anything you’re doing in the DAW during the mixing process... more specific stuff like that.

I'm with Colin. I've wondered about use of MIDI with a steel. I'm fairly ignorant on the subject but guessing some of that must have been done that way.
Very interesting to hear that composition...

Hey Colin,
That's a good idea - maybe I can make a podcast segment or video about how I manipulated the steel. It's mostly playing technique, but I did use pitch shifting for the bass and looping for the percussion stuff and "arpeggiator" track. Everything was done in Pro Tools using the Avid Eleven Rack as the front end. No pedals or MIDI.

I’m interested in people who need traditional Hawaiian and Western swing sounds with more pedal steel stuff with string pulls and slants. Seems like there is a renaissance of people really pushing the instrument into places it has never gone (even more so than pedal steel).
Interesting people:
Mike Neer (forum member who does jazz improv on a lap steel)
Raffael McGregor (NY player who does a lot of pedal steel sounds with string pulls Nd plays all kinds of music)
Tyler Nuffer (another forum member who does trad Hawaiian stuff but also gets more
Modern sounds too)
There’s also Cindy Cashdollar who plays more straight ahead Western swing and rock and played with Bob Dylan.
I still pine for a pedal steel but I’m interested in how much I can max out a C6 8 string lap.
Anyway. Just some thoughts. Love the podcast. I’ve gotten a lot out of it. |
