I’ve heard this song since the release of Suite Steel in 1970, and I just stumbled upon it again this morning on You Tube. IMHO it is the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard on steel guitar, and not surprisingly, it’s played by Buddy Emmons.

Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, and one’s personal taste changes over time. Plus, my listening time budget is pretty low and I have only in the past few years developed a critical ear for steel. But I think I get what Jack is asking.

So many great songs. One of my current beautiful song favorites is 'Wild Mountain Thyme' as played by Greg Leisz from the CD "The Big E: A Salute To Steel Guitarist Buddy Emmons", A great album if looking for some great listening:

Good topic, Jack!
It's so easy for the pedal steel to be painfully beautiful that I find playing it means having to dial it back for the sake of good taste and not being sappy. Yet, it's a cool rabbithole to go down to really tap into that aspect of instrument.
One recording I remember where the player does a lot of the little pedal steel 'tricks' is a live studio video of Gary Carter on the Marty Stuart show. https://youtu.be/ztXiyTEpjfc And on that same Buddy Emmons tribute album he did a gorgeous version of "Shenandoah": https://youtu.be/JNwsZ_7LDGk
Even though this forum isn't big on non-country artists, I think this discussion would be disingenuous if we don't mention recordings made by Bruce Kaphan, Maggie Bjorklund, and Daniel Lanois. They've dived head-first into that aspect of the pedal steel.

Great tune. Might make for an interesting challenge to try that one on steel. Coltrane’s sax solo is unreal.
I see what you mean about the intro, but hey, steal something good, right? Not many people are going to catch that one 🤠|

Great suggestions Curt. I’ve never heard of any of those steelers. I love seeing steel guitar used in uncommon ways, it gives me hope that steel won’t just die out someday. It’s obviously such an incredible and versatile instrument, yet it has been stuck mostly in country music for years and it’s been fizzling out with modern country for awhile.
I’ll bet there are other steel guitarists out there that aren’t strictly “countryâ€. |
