| One thing to consider if you play in a band is how it shows up on stage. I have a SD10 Hybrid Zum that I dearly love but it is blackstone on front and it’s beautiful up close but it just seems to kinda disappear on stage. I also have a red, white & blue lightning bolt Zum that stands out perty good. So it depends on what you are wanting to do also. |

I would like to have a polished ebony polyester finish like on high end pianos.

Dark blue lacquer for me. No blue mica. No red guitars (pretty much don't like red anything). Woodgrain mica, but not rosewood. I really liked the African Teak mica that I chose when I had my Kline built.

I really like the brushed aluminum look I've been seeing; I think it's Mullen doing that.

Me too. Forgot about that one. The first one I saw was a Carter. I believe I also saw a Franklin with this mica. I wonder how much it shows finger/hand prints. Cool look though.

What colors would I buy? Whatever color my wife will let me display full time in our living room with my other guitars.
Right now, she really likes my red ‘Bud.
My old MSA fake brown wood mica, she doesn’t care for, and consequently it stays in the case most of the time.
I’ve been showing her colors for a new Desert Rose I’d like to get.....fingers crossed.....

Much though I wish it was otherwise, I've always hated wood grain mica of all types. Feels to me that if you want the look of wood, get a wood guitar and not spend all that money on something that, to me, can only look like a cheap imitation of wood.
(To be clear, a ton of my favorite steel guitar listening has been music made on wood grain guitars. But I'll take the sound waaaaaay before I'll take the look.) |

I’m not big on wood-grain laminates. They look like 60’s office furniture to me.
Black mica looks classy up close, but gets lost on stage and appears no different than any keyboard instrument from afar. Conversely, red guitars do stand out, so I would opt for a red or red/blonde two-tone transparent lacquer finish.
That said, tone always trumps color.

Because I will only buy a steel locally that I can play first, I have always been limited on what I can buy, so color doesn't make a difference to me...as long as the neck is aluminum!
