Hawaiian music is my preferred listening pleasure. So naturally because of that I am in love with it's use of the steel guitar. One person that seems to have escaped much attention is Kalama Koanui. In this video we see him backing up the great Dennis Pavao. I also have seen some credits with him playing steel guitar with Pandanus Club. Can anyone contribute any more information regarding Michael Kalama Koanui?

Its great to put faces to these sounds. Visiting Hilo in 1995, I picked up a CD collection of Dennis Pavao's 1980 recordings. Na Mele Henoheno. Michael Kalamaku Koanui features on steel guitar throughout. He contributed tasteful fills, melodic breaks, and masterful harmonic passages, the equal of the best traditional Hawaiian players, which was a credit to the whole band, as the 1980s were not the greatest for Hawaiian music. Micheal also contributed a very smooth rendition of Andy Iona's, How D'ya Do. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

I'm pretty sure I have CDs with Bobby Ingano playing steel with Dennis Pavao.

Thanks for making my morning Norm with this clip. Love the song Makee Ilana and it doesn’t get much better than Dennis Pavao. |

Mahalo Norman,
Bobby had told me that he had added steel later but I didn't realize that the singers were added. And I didn't remember what album it was. Thank you.

Don't hear much about Kalama Koanui. Is he still playing anywhere? Nice steel guitar!

I work with Kalama at the Aulani Resort and it's a joy. He's still tearing it up on guitar and steel guitar at the Polynesian and Hawaiian shows. |
