Holy, [well you know the next word]. When I watched that, my mind drifted and I could see Oscar's hands on the piano. Outrageously beautiful playing.

So then...it is okay to play fast sometimes?

I'm half expecting someone to step in and comment about "playing too many notes" and "playing too fast". Laughing

On a different note, I've always loved the Charlie Parker cut of "Just Friends" with the lush string section. Big sustained strings with Parker riffing over them. Search it out and enjoy!

Speed picking isn't everything, but if the technique is flawless and the note choice is right (as Mr. Franklin has pointed out) then it can be quite impressive.

Here's an example that blows me away every time I view it.

(RIP Mr. Ascione). Does anyone know how Frank Vignola is doing these days - has he returned to playing since his accident?

Keep on picking'!
Glenn

That guy is a wonderful player IMHO and pretty flawless for someone playing that fast. One thing though, was he maybe flipping the rest of us off who can't play up to that tempo? I noticed his "birdie" finger on his right hand was mostly fully extended during his playing......... Very Happy ....JH in Va.

There is the hazard of having chops like that and wanting to flash them on every piece of music you play. It comes down to a matter of taste, and respect for the music as not always being a vehicle for a display of speed. I appreciate the fact that Paul’s comment includes the phrase “superb note choice”, which implies speed is pointless without tastefulness. At that tempo I simply don’t have the ear to determine anything other than, wow that’s fast and sounds clean and I assume the note choice is accurate.

And now for a fresh round of “Can you play like that?” from friends and family...

It has to be noted that Oscar Peterson was playing chords with his left hand, too.

If I understand the video correctly, the "note choice" was Oscar Peterson's.

A few days ago I saw a jazz piano trio. All three musicians played much faster than I can even think. They were amazing. Almost made we want to give up playing. Oh Well

That's the thing about music - there will always be players better than us. We can't look at it as a competition.

Wow - impressive chops and transcribing!

Now I need to go listen to some Bob Dylan to reset my brain. Very Happy
