Topic: Looking for my first steel |

I'm wanting to find a good used pedal steel to learn on. Looking for something above a student model level. Preferably a SD-10 3x4.
I'm 26 from Alberta Canada, and with the exchange rate, it makes it hard to find something at a reasonable price here. Looking for something around the $2400 CAD ($1800 USD) price range. I know it might be a stretch, but would appreciate any help I can get! |

Zumsteel Encore, hands down great steel within your price range. Just a waiting list is the only downside. How patient are you?

| I would also recommend a Marlen, which is a great steel...my first one was a Marlen, and I wish I had kept it. Probably find one affordable, as well...I also owned one of the original Zum before the Encore models were built. Great steel guitar...also wish I had kept that one... |

| I just got a ZumSteel Encore. I wish it was what I got as my first steel because it's so much easier to play than my old, used steel. It's in your price range. |

+1 for the Zumsteel Encore.
I have one, along with an Emmons Lashley LeGrande, and a Derby SD-10.
The Encore plays great, sounds great and is MUCH lighter than the other two.
On top of that, Doug Earnest is a good and easy guy to deal with.
Well worth the wait, imho!

The Encore is a great guitar however they are not available in an SD-10 which is why I sold mine. I just feel more comfortable behind a double or 1 & 1/2 framed guitar. Carter, GFI, Marlen, Justice, and other great brands were made or are still being made in SD--10.
Mind you if your price range is $1800 US and you want an SD-10 vs an S-10 your best bet is to buy right here on the forum. I would also highly recommend Steel Guitars of North County. They offer guitars in every price range including SD-10 models.

| For many of us, myself included, the main advantage of playing an SD-10 over an S-10 is the more ergonomic knee lever placement, so adding a pad later to an S-10 will not give you that benefit. Of course these things are always subjective. What is more comfortable for one player is less comfortable for another. Ergonomics are subjective as much as tone when it comes to this instrument and of course getting used to any guitar takes some time. |
