The pipe organ industry was so threatened by the Hammond organ that they took their case to the Federal Trade Commission.

Maybe they needed "hearing" aids.

Reminds me a little of Henry Ford's fight with the all powerful ALam.

I don’t think it got to the FTC, but didn’t the Nashville String Union take legal exception to studio steel players doing the BossTone-simulated-string-section thing in the 70’s?

Verrry interesting...I'm wondering if the pipe organ industry is still viable, since organ pipes are made mostly of lead, and these days that's a highly controlled and regulated substance. I can almost see the standard disclaimer now being required on the pipe organ keyboards, something on the order of...

"WARNING! - THIS INSTRUMENT CONTAINS VAST QUANTITIES OF A SUBSTANCE KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER, BIRTH DEFECTS, AND OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM."

Laughing

Suddenly the expression "lead pipe cinch" doesn't seem so appropriate!

Dang! It's that "other reproductive harm" stuff that would steer me off!

The European Union passed a law designed to ensure the use of lead-free solder in electronic keyboards which had the unforeseen effect of rendering pipe organs illegal.

Maybe it's sorted now.

As if just being an organ player wasn't already enough to cause that! Laughing

Hammond then proceeded to distribute a module that provided classical pipe tones for your organ as an expander. Made by Dutch pipe organ makers, Content Organs and sold by Hammond as well.

The expander connects through MIDI and it sounds similar to this Content unit:

Another company Organtechnologies offers this module for serious pipe players.

Then there's the software versions of pipe tones:

But yeah Laurens had his hands full with trying to launch the Hammond organ and from his Hammond clock company which today are collectible and still keep time running off of 60hz. Laurens used to give power company people his clocks to incentiveize them to keep the cycles at 60hz so his clocks would run properly.

This idea translates to today with any Hammond using the tonewheel generator that gets A-440 from AC 60Hz.

So much so is this an important issue, that frequency converters are made to keep your B3 in tune as power companies shift Hz constantly today.

Hammond made clocks before he made organs.
