Anyone try em for steel? Looks much like a compact single channel DR w/ added features i.e. Mid control. 22W/12"spkr. Some say a bit louder than classic DR. They were the last of hand wired PTP amps made from '62 to '68. Rivera era.

Just worked on one for a studio in Moultrie Ga. Gary D is the owner and a fabulous steel player. It is his favorite amp for steel in the studio.
It is a wonderful sounding amp.
I own two Blackface Princton Reverbs. However if I find one of the PR II amps that I can afford I am buying it. Prices here in the States are around 900.00 or less |

The small Rivera-era blackface amps are not so far different from the comparable silverface amps until you push them hard. They put a bunch of bling like push/pull bright/midrange-boost switches and a switchable lead channel with separate lead level pot. I didn't find they broke up as sweetly as the earlier amps, and I never liked the overdrive channel on any of them, including the Super Champ or Princeton/Deluxe II. But I always felt they had a good, classic Fender clean sound, and more poop than their blackface/silverface counterparts. For example, I agree that the Princeton II is more like a single-channel Deluxe, about 20 watts RMS into a 12" speaker. With a clean, efficient speaker, they are more Deluxe-like in the clean range.
Since I play guitar too and care about a sweeter breakup when pushed, I prefer a silverface Princeton/Deluxe Reverb over one of these unless the price differential is real huge. But I do see these reasonable sometimes and for steel, I think they can be a good choice. |

I'm picking one up today for $700 from local CL. I've been wanting to build a single ch DR which would end up costing more when you figure in time,labor, building custom cab.
The PR2 looks like a very well built boutique amp with a Fender cosmetics. Some unusable bells and whistles i.e. crappy OD. But plenty of fun mod possibilities,i.e. black facing. |

I have one and like it quite a bit. It did take a Eminence Travis Toy 12" speaker to be viable for steel at lower volume or for rocking out. Not much head room. I'll include a link of a show where I use it. Just the amo into the room not mic'd.

Yes it would. I didn't like it too much for steel before putting that in. I also don't like the reverb too much, I pedals for that, mostly delay.
