| Model number stamped inside. You can date these by referencing the serial number, Martins are pretty easy to do so with. Once dated, check the value of similar aged instruments on reverb.com. |

These are from the late 1990’s and he’s asking $2,500 each plus shipping.

Nick, look inside at the neck block. The model and serial number is stamped there. They look like D-18 Martin's but could be something else. Is that price for both guitars ?
If you do check with Reverb on value, look at sales and not asking price. The same with ebay. |

One is a D-28H (for 'herringbone') and the other, with the extended fingerboard with white edging, looks like perhaps a 'Tony Rice' model. Not quite sure of that, though.
The prices seem reasonable although not a 'steal'. (Neither should they be.  )
Bud is correct - the relevant info should be on the heel-block.

i'm surprised your friend doesn't know what they are. they are both great looking. yes, the info is on the heel block. looks like one is an hd28 but can't tell about the other. more pics, including back and sides would help after you have gathered the necessary info.

The one on the left is probably a Clarence White model. Note oversize soundhole (as on the original CW/Tony Rice 1935 D-18) and bound fretboard.

Looks like a CW model but the “dalmatian†pickguard was changed from the original to a delmar guard.
This is a model (if it is a CW) that came with a fairly large sticker on the inside back in the soundhole area. Not everyone cares for the looks of these stickers and they carefully remove them and keep them in a safe place for future reference if they decide to sell the guitar. This sort of thing comes under the heading of Martin Geekdom 101.
Makes me curious as to why Nicholas’ friend isn’t aware of all this since it was a limited run model.

| I'm guessing the one on the left is an LSV...as in an HD-28 LSV (Large sound vintage) which Martin came out with before they had the deal to use Clarence's name. They came out in the late 90s and they made them for a few years. They didn't have the dalmation pick guard. And that pick guard looks factory. Good guitars. The other looks like it's probably a standard HD-28. Hard to tell if it's herringbone but I'm guessing it is. |

Todd, good call on the LSV - I'd completely forgotten about that guitar.
But then Martin has come out with more special editions and limited runs over the years than Carter has pills!

| Guitar on the left is definitely an HD28-LSV. 1 3/4" nut width with a V neck. The first few years (late 90's) had adironack tops, after that sitka. No fretboard dots but there are small dots on the upper binding on the neck. |
