Hi,

I'm wondering how others have these set up? I've had one for a couple of years and have used it with my regular guitar with no issues. I'm now trying it with my PS but it doesn't seem to like the volume pedal very much. I've tried it in both the FX loop of the amp and between the volume pedal (a Hilton) and the amp.

Are people using these before the volume pedal? It's not handling the dynamics well.

Thanks,

G

You've probably got the gain set too high on your Hilton pedal. I use mine with a pot pedal, and it works great. It would probably work better with a steady signal, so try it guitar-B9-pedal-amp. You have nothing to lose.

In addition to Donny's suggestions, you should try doing a creative search through the forum for this topic.
It has been covered extensively in the past.

Some terms to search for:
EHX
B9
B-9
C9
C-9

Yes I put the B9 right after the Steel output, before the Volume Pedal.

The B9's "Click" knob is a little too hot for Pedal Steel, imho.
You can use your volume pedal in the off position when you pick the notes, to get rid of that click, then swell it right up. This method also gets rid of the Latency/Tracking issue.
Setting-1 seemed to work best.
I also noticed that the B9 worked GREAT for 6-string guitar.
I am using the C9 for Steel now, as it seems to work better for Steel overall.

Staying below the 12th fret works best for me as it gets a bit too "hairy" for me above that.

Hi, I did a search but most of what I found was in the "for sale" section. I didn't try "EHX" though. Thanks.

Put a compressor in front of it to keep the input signal more even?

Aaaaagh! That made my head explode!

I'll try running the steel into a compressor and the B-9 before the volume pedal.

Appreciate everyone's help on this!

It definitely has to be before the volume pedal. That should solve it, no compressor necessary.

Gabriel, I use a B9 and it has its own "compression" as part of the organ effect... sustains like holding a keyboard key down. It won't like a volume pedal in front of it, as it will take what ever volume goes into it on the attack and sustains that until the next time you pick. I run the steel into a buffer, then a wah, then the B9, then a stereo 25K volume pedal, so the Steel, B9 and wah provide the sound of the "organ", then the VP controls that collective sound. The only way I could figure to get both an "Organ" and "Steel" FX was to have two separate FX paths because of this very issue. I have a 500K VP for use between the steel and amp without this pile of FX. The diagram Godfrey provided is of my rig, but I've since placed the VP after the B9:

That's what I ended up with. I first tried a compressor (Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone) into the B9 but it sounded a lot better without it IMHO.

Trying to keep things as simple as possible - my regular guitar rig is complex enough. . .
