I'm looking to buy a Wheel Eze case (the kind once made by Sierra).

Thanks,
Susan

Susan, these are actually SKB drum trap cases, can be bought through any SKB agent, you have to put foam in yourself ( or have someone do it). Believe there are similar cases in the Aligator range.

Thank you Asa, Russ, and Ralph!

I've been in contact with SKB. Their new cases, the ones you helpfully referenced, are bit smaller than the original Wheel-Eze cases, and for my double necks, they don't have enough room (though I know some people have been able to make them work), which is why I'm searching for the older ones. Perhaps it's a quixotic quest.

Susan, mine works for both of my D-10s, the MSA Millennium and the Franklin. The MSA is a little shorter so I put an extra block (or a paperback book) in at the end to fill the space when I'm carrying that guitar in the case.

Susan I use the same SKB drum trap case for my Zum Hybrid D10's as well - they fit well, including the foam padding I installed so a Emmons D10 should fit in their ok !

The inside width in the current SKB case is 12” and the width of my D10’s is 11”. Not much room for padding.

I have been talking with Calton cases. They are looking into a case that will have multiple purposes that may fit a steel.

Susan, if the SKB H3611 is too small there are bigger ones the H4816, or H4818, those may be what you are looking for.

I recently acquired a single 12 Sierra and that thing is a beast. The case weighs about 35 lb by itself. I remember those Wheel Eze cases advertised in the 90s but had not thought about them again until I got a Sierra. I'll watch this thread.

Thanks everyone for your advice on the SKB cases, and Bob, that's great news (hopefully) about the Calton cases. I've been in touch with SKB, but they no longer make the same case that was used for the Wheel-Eze.

Thanks Malcolm for the heads up on the H4816 - that would definitely fit anyone's steel guitar in it, but it's pretty far over the 62 inches l+h+w for air travel.

In the meantime, if anyone has an old Sierra-built Wheel-Eze for sale, if you let me know, I'd sure appreciate it.

Susan, one other suggestion is Scott Dixon Cases, although a UK company I believe they have have a US branch, they make extremely light weight wheeled cases made to your own specs and dimensions, down side is that they are expensive ( but great). I use one myself.

re:I'm looking to buy a Wheel Eze case (the kind once made by Sierra).

I have one that I use for my Franklin but it's not for sale. lol It's about 18 years old. I've been very happy with mine and if you get one, you should consider covering the metal pieces inside it so that you don't scratch any chrome on your guitar. I used heat shrink and it's still holding great.

If anyone has one that needs parts you can have a look on the Skb parts site:

This is an inexpensive fix...1/4” rod, thread the ends for nuts, drill in the corners, hard rubber wheels and a handle on the other end..for a S10 Excel (31 lbs)..I’ve pulled this though several airports and clubs.. Shocked

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

I have one of the more recent versions of the SKB case that was used for the Wheel-Eze, the 12" x 36" one. It's just a tad too small for the my D10 with the legs, pedal bar etc. I'm looking for one of the older cases that were slightly bigger.

Larry, I love your ingenuous fix for the cases - that is great.

My needs are for air travel, especially overseas trips. I need something light, like the Wheel-Eze that will fit my steel guitar (along with the legs and pedal bar). These days, I put the legs into my suitcase, but for car and train travel, it's good to have the legs in the case with the steel - one less thing to get lost.

Malcolm, thanks for the information about the Scott Dixon case - that looks really nice. As for the other SKB's those are a little too big - they exceed the size limits for most airlines. Kind of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears . . .

Bob, If I find out anything, I'll let you know, and if you hear of anything let me, let all of us know. I think this is something of interest for all of us, especially those who have to fly.

Steve didn’t answer any emails or Facebook messages from me - I sent 5 of each over 6 months.

I ordered a fibre-style hard plastic flight case from phillycase.com - should arrive soon and I will post my findings.
