Topic: Jimmy Bryant’s tunes for lap steel |

I was practicing for a gig and got totally sidetracked by a strong desire to learn this great Jimmy Bryant tune, The Night Rider. I transcribed it and laid it out for C13 tuning and then transposed it to A from Bb. It works well in Bb, too, but I enjoy playing it in A. It took me about two hours of work to get up to this tempo, which is still only about 80% of the original.
I don’t plan on playing it live but there are some valuable little pieces of musical dna contained within. I haven’t done a video lesson in a while, this might be a good one.
I think one of the most valuable things to remember is if there is a will, there is a way. Look at every conceivable way of playing something in order to maximize efficiency, get the right articulation, etc.

Ambitious! ..... And well done, Mike. Jimmy Bryant's lines still sound fresh all these years later and you are playing them very cleanly - no small task.

Actually, I’ve been binging on arranging Jimmy Bryant heads for a few days now and have done a few, including Pickin’ Peppers and Bryant’s Bounce, which are a blast.
I injured my left hand pretty badly yesterday and have to have it wrapped for a while, but can manage to guide the bar underneath it all.

Thanks, I’m babying it and keeping it wrapped and icing. It is a lot better than it was (my wife is a great nurse!). It is a strain of the metacarpal ligament between my index and middle finger. Made me really appreciate just how much I rely on my left hand in everyday simple actions. Not drastically impacting my playing, butit would if I was still playing Spanish guitar.

So much fun! A lot of people don’t really like the really uptempo tunes and don’t think the lap steel is good for it, but I am not one of those people. I am always on the lookout for cool stuff to play for my own head.
