I've had a nice Christmas present - the 'lower' rod on the fifth string on my LeGrande 111 has come unhooked!

It's on the E9 neck and it's on pedal 4 (Franklin change). It's obvious what's happened because I found the e-clip under my guitar.

The trouble is that I don't know what hole on the bell-crank it was hooked into. It's a whole-step 'lower' so does that mean it was closer to the cross-shaft? It's impossible to see where it was as it's so crowded in that particular spot. Getting it hooked up again and the e-clip relocated is going to be a challenge but, right now, the issue is 'where should it go?'

PS: They're 14-hole bell-cranks, of course.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

If it was setup correctly put it in a hole- any hole- and engage the change- and see if it lands on the intended note and starts at the same time as the other changes. If it starts earlier- move it up- if later- move it down. Also- it should be pretty obvious if it wants to be in the front or back holes as if it was in the back and you put it in the front there will be tons of free play b4 engaging and if in the front it will probably not reach the back holes.

Jim's advice did the trick and the correct location was confirmed.

'Embarrassing' because, despite my very best efforts and some colourful language, I was unable to relocate the e-clip due to the extremely confined area surrounding the bell-crank (right by the counterforce rod).

In comes Mrs Rettig saying 'What's all the fuss about?' and, moments later, she'd popped the e-clip into place.

Embarassed

Can I send her my guitar?

Yes - I'm now contemplating exploiting this skill she displayed of which I was hitherto unaware.

I know what you mean -- my wife is a ceramic sculptor, and without her help, I never would have gotten the little gadget Jim Palenscar made me to add a third raise to one string on my old MSA into its place.

Sometimes if the bell crank is in too close quarters to remove or install the e clip, I’ll remove the bell crank. Its usually easier to manipulate the clip in a less confined area. Removing and reinstalling the bell crank on a LeGrande is pretty much a piece of cake. .
