I’m working out this ridiculous intro and wonder if anyone can offer some insight on what’s going on here. Seems like a lot of strings 1-4 descending in various combinations starting with a pickup at 15th fret, all over a long 5 (D7) chord. There are some unfamiliar positions in there though and I keep getting stuck.

Also, is this Curly Chalker? I know he played on the Wilburn Bros show and had a squirrelly way with the E9 chromatic strings.

I didn't work it out but it sounds like classic Hal Rugg. I believe Hal tuned his 2nd string to C#, so you'll hear a lot of 2nd string lowered combinations in his playing!

I agree. He turns me inside out with that stuff. It's so good.

Ah, makes sense this def does sound like Hal Rugg and looks like he also played with Wilburn Bros. I’ll try lowering string 2 to c# and see if that reveals anything.

John is right. Hal is the one. When I was a kid, I always tried to get my hands on every Wilburn brothers album because of Hal. A lot of moving the needle and using a variac to learn the licks.

I was playing on the Opry and asked Weldon if I could play his guitar. To my suprise, he also had the 2nd string tuned down.
