Sorry for this, but at the price mentioned, I gotta wonder:
Was black a standard color around 1953? (Earliest two-pickup Esquires maybe. Otherwise, walnut and blond. [Edit: What Cartwright said.]) No front spaghetti-logo decal? Tuner pans don't match?

Yes, one of the pans is from the slightly later short or medium scale version.
In order to get that pan to fit, a little bit of wood would have been removed from the guitar.
Should not be described as "All authentic and original" |

I don't see any evidence that the guitar was refinished. I did assume it is a Stringmaster but if Fender had similar models, it might be that but I believe it has always been black.[/quote] |

The tuner pans DO match and could have never have been longer. Look at the picture. If they had ever been longer they would not have fit into the space that now occupy.

The tuners look a bit different. Both "lollypop" style, but in the back neck are flat and not the same colour.

I apologise - I was wrong about the pans being different - I was looking at it on my phone. However, the slots in the back pan were cut at a later date as they shouldn't be there and the tuners themselves are definitely different - the correct lolipop tuners on the front neck and the newer oval buttons on the back neck with the slots.
I would agree that the black finish and lack of a logo suggests a possible refin and would need to see better pictures with the hardware removed to know for sure. The only way the black finish could be original would be if it was a custom order from Fender as this wasn't a standard option for Stringmasters.
But on the tuners alone I still stand by my original comment that it should not be described as "All authentic and original". |

The tuner pans are the same, however, someone cut slots in the one to replace the lollypop tuners with the newer style tuners.

[Thanks to Erv Niehaus, Cartwright Thompson, Ben Elder, Jeff Mead, Francisco Castillo and Lefty Schrage, I’m getting an education on Fender Stringmaster guitars. I appreciate you all taking the time to share your knowledge.
Apparently, the guitar is original hardware-wise except the tuner pan on the back neck was modified with slots cut to accommodate the new-style tuners. The new tuners are the same color but are polished shiny.
And blond and maple were the two common finishes. This black guitar may have been refinished but I can’t see any evidence. There are a couple small chips and I don’t see any other color under the black so if it was refinished, the old finish must have been removed.
Anyway, I appreciate your input and I will remove the “All authentic and Original†and lower the price a bit. Thank you all. |

Good job.
This '53 or '54 26" scale steel looks like it is in great condition and could well be a fantastic guitar. How it left the factory matters only as to how it is described. |
