Has anyone used this amp for pedal steel and would it be better than the Peavey Bandit that I use now. Little or no stage work. Mostly practice and bedroom playing.

I use the Boss Katana 50 on my road gig with the David Church Show. The venues are theatres and the sound people almost always Mic the amps. It is small and light weight and it works for me. I have no experience with the Bandit...

I recently played through a Katana 50 and a small Peavey at a music store. I’m not sure which Peavey but a Bandit sounds right.
The Katana impressed me enough to get interested in them. But for natural realism the Peavey won out.
Most steel Katana users only use one setting. I’m not sure you need all the extra options. Do you play guitar as well?

I would be mostly be using it for steel but when I play guitar It's for recording. I would think that the 50 would be good for guitar.

The Katana 50 is my main steel amp at this point. I've upgraded the speaker to a WGS ET65. I've also reinforced the back with an extra piece of wood, making the back opening smaller. I put a little lean-back kick stand on it too. I've played plenty of shows with it, and lots of band practices with a full-volume drummer.

I’ve got a Celestion G-65 and it does sound nice when I try it with steel. Similar to that WGS 65 Dustin uses.

Thanks for all the replys. I guess I'll buy. It seems that the speaker may not be great for steel. Is that the reason for changing it?

Katana 50 over a Bandit absolutely any day for me personally. They are great amps and the price of is hard to beat.

which Bandit ? There are probably a dozen different ones with the same badge. They are all not equal .

This one is just fine for Steel and guitar, the first issue, Bandit 65.

This one will SMOKE most amps in the small amp category.Very Happy

Don't get me wrong, the Katana's are pretty kool and fill a void.

This is interesting Tony. I have no experience with the earlier bandits and didn't know
they are not all the same. The later ones I've tried did sound right for steel. Thanks for the info

My Bandit is a (circa) 1996 silver stripe with a Sheffield speaker. It sounds OK but It's heavy and if I could find something lighter that would approximate the sound I'd be a happy guy.

I can't say what the differences between the early ones and the later ones are, but the PANELS and KNOBS/Buttons are WAY different. Not even close. The early issues sound like a small N400, good mid range control and a Scorpion speaker. I think PV took the opportunity to drive this BANDIT badge as far as it could go ! Very Happy

I love my Katana 50, and I use it for practice and as a gig backup. I think it sounds good, but I also really love that it's got a 1/8" line in and a headphone out jack, so I can play along with my phone into headphones while my wife watches TV, and all she hears is the unplugged strings and pedals clicking and stuff. I'm sure that those jacks aren't unique to that amp, but I don't have the option of that setup with my other amp (Peavey Sesssion 400).

Russ,
It looks like it takes about 6 beers for it to sound nice.
Is that about right?! Laughing Laughing

I have the 100 watt head version and run it through my TT-12 speaker cabinet. The little 5" speaker built into the head is good enough for practice. I have the setting on acoustic. It is a very good sounding amp. It is not far behind my Stereo Steel and Evans. Search Ron Hogan. He has several sound clips and a video on the amp.

I bought this amp and I'm quite happy with the sound and volume but I would like to know if anyone has one and what settings they use. Now I know that every guitar and player is different but if I could get a starting point it would be much easier. I have a 2010 Carter S10(one of the last made) 3 and 5 so that might help if someone has the same guitar.

Charlie,
I have a Katana 50 also, but I'm using it for my 8 string lap steels on the 25 watt setting here at home. I also have a Carter S12 universal but I use a Nash. 112 or an MB200 with that. Anyway, if it will help, here are my settings: Gain-11 Vol.-12 Bass-2 Mid-11 Treb-11 Reverb-12 Master-on full. My lap steels do have a tone control so I roll off the highs a little with that.

I'll be playing the lap steel soon at a Church banquet with a Hawaiian theme, so I will take the Katana 50 and probably use the 50 watt setting. I really like the amp.
