I’m going to Musicfest for the first time this year. What steel players do I need to make sure to see? |

The two years I was up there with Gary P., Chris Schlotzhauer and I were the only steel players that I could ascertain. AFAIK, Chris and I were two of the oldest musicians in attendance, if not the oldest. Gary P. and Michael Murphey were without a doubt the oldest "artists."
It was pretty much all full-bearded guitarists in various types of alternative bands I had little interest in, dressed in flannel shirts and wool caps carrying acoustic guitars, accompanied by their totally babe-i-licious blond girlfriends in very expensive ski clothes. Patron tequila was the drink of choice.
If you ski you'll have other opportunities for entertainment. Curmudgeon that I am, I was bored to tears. Also on each trip, the airlines lost something; first year it was my guitar, second year it was my luggage. My personal vow: never again.
Excuse the rant. Carry on with the thread. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

I think I am opting out this year because I would have to miss too much work to play with my group there. After a look at the lineup I suspect you will see:
Zachary with Mike and the Moonpies
Hank with Turnpike Troubadours
Matthew with Randall King
Geoff Queen with Hayes Carll and/or Bruce Robison
Hope that helps,

If you are driving, good luck going over Rabbit Ear Pass. They try to keep the road open, but I bet the snow is at least 4 feet deep now. I used to Elk hunt west of there. |

From my perspective, Mike and the Moonpies has a very good steel player. At least on their recorded work. Not familiar with the others. |
