? for the flautists among us. I'm considering a low end flute for just a few songs such as MTB Can't you See and Men at Work's Down Under etc.

I see some entry level flutes at Amazon for about $100 or less.

Do you think they are worthwhile for just an occasional tune or two?

I see some of them are closed and some open holes with inserts.

Please, no patronizing and/or condescending remarks...just honest answers and opinions from qualified musicians will be appreciated.

All due respect to the masters of the instrument. I don't think I have enough time left to study it to a really professional level.

I can get some of these sounds on a synth, but I'd like them to be a little more authentic. Thanks. JO.

You can buy a penny whistle (tin whistle) for under ten bucks, and start to learn woodwind fingering. They aren't really chromatic, but you can play most of the fiddle tunes in the familiar keys. And it fits in the pakaseat.

Thank You Earnest. I will certainly look into those.

I have an acquaintance that does some of this stuff on a recorder. Any thoughts on those?

A whistle has a more flexible tone than a recorder, which is somewhat straight-laced.

Thanks Ian. I think I'm gonna go for the penny whistle.

This record shows just how versatile this little instrument can be.

I am a school music dealer. Stay away from the $100 flutes.
They are made of soft metal and poor quality pads and don't play well or hold up. Repair people don't want to work on them either... Find a used Gemeinhardt or Yamaha, closed hole, in good playing condition if you want that type of flute. Contact me if you have any questions.

I have had good times with Native American Pentatonic straight flutes. Made one from a two piece kit and bought several others. Wonderful tone, easy to play but maybe not able to play Western 12 note scales like you might be looking for.
