I know most of the old timers have heard this stuff, and a lot of players just prefer E9th. But maybe...just maybe, there's a few newbies that haven't been introduced to these stylings. Of particular interest (to me) are Curly's renditions of "Danny Boy", and "Gentle On My Mind". This stuff just blows me away!

Hope you enjoy it:

Man...talk about hitting the spot. Those tangy chords and rhythm stabs on "Gentle on My Mind" make me remember when hearing Chalker and Emmons on "Home in San Antone" made me want to play whatever was making THOSE SOUNDS. I had heard OF this album but don't think I'd heard it. Thanks for posting it.

I love to hear Curly Chalker play steel guitar. He certainly was a killer player.

Just to make sure, is he playing an E9 pedal steel?

He rips it up on "Gentle On My Mind"! (try listening around 15:40. Whew!)

Very nice!

Thanks Donny....Curly was an amazing steel guitarist and musician. Even though many of our Masters have gone on, we still have their great music to appreciate. Thanks again for posting this link...Carl

In case this wasn't noticed on YouTube, there also is the Side-1 of the LP if interested:

Here's more. Someone has posted some very nice copies of "More Ways To Play" and "Counterpoint", and a lot more. Much better than my old vinyl.

This album was released in 1974. A lot of music from back then sounds dated. But between the excellent selection of songs Curly chose to cover, and his very "high-energy" style of playing makes these songs sound so alive even today. Curly deserves way more attention that he gets as one of the masters of our instrument.

This post reminded me to, finally, punch Curly Chalker into my Spotify. Great results. Helped the workday out.
