There's so much good going on in this clip - what can you say? The local steelmen are great - you can see they love the steel.
This is the best camera angle of Emmons' technique I've seen. Regarding Emmon's blocking technique (very visible @ 2:30) compare with Paul Franklin's description of his "pick blocking" method in "A Conversation With Lloyd Green Part 3."

Great video, Thanks. I sent it to my Japanese friend. He should be able to ID the 3 Japanese players.
I believe that's the trip that Buddy, Scotty and Jerry Byrd all went together.
Buddy told me that he had broom handle bar in his picks & bar pouch and when he got home, Jerry had taken a pocket knife and did some whittling on it.
They must have had a ball!

I remember Fuzzy steels being around in the UK in the '70s. I can't help feeling that, regardless of how good they may have been, they were behind the eight-ball with that brand name.
'Excel' is surely far more appropriate.
This is a wonderful clip! What a good sport Buddy always was, adapting to this unusual environment and still coming out on top.

That was not only musically arranged but the camera director knew where things were going as well!
Ishida Shintaro, Ozaki Takashi, Noguchi Takeyosh all added their own space and solos pushing the whole piece along.
Buddy, gracious as ever and burning up the bar!
Yeah brand names in Japan can sort of leave one with a headscratcher as in many countries where a certain word means something to the culture but makes no sense to us ferners...
Popular Japanese sports drink so named to connote replacing what is lost when humans sweat during a sports activity. And the word Pocari means nothing actually only that it sounds good to the Japanese ear.
Have a friend in Argentina, he tells me that rock music is called "bateria" meaning "battery" or electric guitars featuring tremolo effects etc. It makes sense to them.

One of the things that is interesting to note about Buddy's right hand technique is that it seems like he does most of his single note C6 picking with his thumb and index finger. I think most guys use the thumb and second finger. I remember when I was starting out that it took awhile to get used to using the second finger but it soon seemed to make it easier.

I noticed that too. I guess Buddy was equally adept with either method but I always struggled with thumb-and-second. I persevered for years and one day gave up. Switching to thumb-and-index sped things up for me.
Odd, because thumb-and-second feels easier for me on 6 string.

Novice that I am, I find it easier to pick with thumb and index as they are closer to each other.

On Jelle Biel's post - the second of the two clips, if you open "show more" it gives Kools Biel playing steel and Buddy on bass. |
