Just saw a Rick bakelite 10-string for sale on Elderly. Don't know anything about it. Is that original?

I don't see it now, but yeah, they made them. The neck wasn't bakelite though, it was metal. |

I have always thought these would make a great boat anchor also, but I've never tried that theory out.

There are two of them at Norman's Rare Guitars. Both slightly modified. Everybody looks at them and makes remarks, but no one is interested in taking them home.
Trying to send pictures but having problems with it, will try again later. _________________ A big THANKS to all my friends, here and everywhere ! |

It sure looks like the strings are close together.

The strings are closely spaced on the Gibson Century 10-strings too, Erv. Not real conducive to slants.

The Elderly Ric was bought last week by a member of my FB group. I'm hoping for a report. |

Jack,
Yes, those strings are close together too.
Otherwise, Gibson had a rather wide spacing on their strings.
I was playing a Gibson lap steel and then I went to a T-8 Stringmaster, with the closer string spacing.
After that, it was hard going back to the Gibson.

I was at Jim Palenscar's shop a couple of weeks
ago, and he has one there that looks real nice.

Solid Bakelite bodies are not great for tuning stability. When you bolt on a metal neck, it’s a recipe for disaster, tuning-wise. At least that’s my experience with the double neck versions. That being said, nothing sounds better than a pre-war Bakelite Rick.
And yes, any more than seven strings on a Rickenbacker makes string spacing way too tight for me. |

I have a RICKENBACHER MODEL B (white plates) 7 STRING: c. 1946,
and a RICKENBACKER MODEL BD (white plates) 8 STRING: c. 1950.
I agree with Cartwright regarding string spacing. The 7 string is fine for slants.
8 string spacing is too close for me to make good slants on 2 adjacent strings
at lower frets.

The 10 string model strikes me as an after-thought,trying to cover a possible market for more strings... I guess it's just a matter of opinion ! String spacing is close alright ! |

Just out of curiosity: how's the string balance on these Ricks?
Every Rick horseshoe pickup I've played with 8 strings had one or both of the outer strings noticeably weaker than the rest. Is this even worse with the 10-stringers? |

Any string that comes up weak, gets replaced with a larger diameter string. This has worked on 6six, seven, eight, and ten string guitars.
Ideally the bar touches every string at the same time. A round nose on at least one end of the bar makes three note slant chords a breeze.

Jim's was the 1st one I have seen in person, and I thought it was absolutely stunning.
But I am still
trying my best to learn a six string in C6, so I have
been exercising self restraint.
Here it is, in the case:

Unfortunately, I have found that this does not work. You'd need inch-thick strings to balance the 8-stringers I've had. |

I've read somewhere that Eddie Alkire ordered them?
Only a few were made as far as I know.
Eddie Alkire had an unusual tuning that didn't require much in the way of slants... At least that what I have heard, but I may be way off.
I had and sold a nice 10 string Alkire E-Harp and it also had very close string spacing. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html
