This is an excerpt from a solo performance two weeks ago as part of the Option series at the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. It starts off with a piece that I wrote followed by short references to some other music including a Chilean nueva canción song, and three jazz standards which I hope are recognizable. It was pure joy playing that night in Chicago, and I hope you enjoy the music that came from it.

The more I hear your music, the better I think I hear what you're doing. Of course, it's not what you're hearing; my ears are corrupted by what I've heard,
be it Coltrane or how I hear symphonic movement development. In an ensemble, it's easier to hear, because everybody's defining the song.
Alone, you play the whole orchestra.
I would think I was hearing the tunes you were giving a nod too, but they're elusive. It takes an educated ear (educated to your music).
Without a doubt it's challenging, but then that's what you're here for. Re-educating ears, I suppose, but not alone in that. |

Ron, Charlie, and Rick,
I'm glad you liked the music in the video. The songs I referenced were El Pueblo Unido by the Chilean group Quilapayun, Thelonious Monk's Pannonica, John Coltrane's Naima, and Broken Shadows which was written by Ornette Coleman.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and listen. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

Susan, great stuff as always. Coltrane would be pleased. When I grow up I'd like to sound like that. |

Susan, do you work on your own instrument? To keep an older guitar in that state of tune must surely take some effort. |

Danny, my guitar stays in tune pretty well (knock on wood), and I haven’t had to many problems with it (knock on wood again). I can do minor things on my guitar, which is not that old - I think it’s late 70s and it’s a triple raise triple lower all-pull, but no, I can’t do anything major. My guitar was set up by the late Bobby Bowman and has over the last few years been worked on by the great Billy Knowles in North Carolina and Craig Holden, who was Bobby’s protege, in Austin Texas.[/i] _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

I'm always intrigued by your music, Susan. Beautiful playing and overall conception of the music. The sustained harmonic dissonances in the first piece are amazing. Even the low passages don't get muddy and you hear those upper harmonics. Cool!
BTW, I particularly enjoyed the duets you did with Mary Halvorson; your two approaches seem to dovetail really well. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |
