I’ve watched many of those videos over and over, and I don’t ever plan to stop. Knowing Bill might finally get a little compensation for all his hard work makes it even more worthwhile. YouTube here I come!

...you only get paid if a viewer watches the whole ad (or at least 30 seconds if it's longer).

There are shorter ads and small banners that are less annoying. Viewers are less likely to skip those.

How do you get away using copywritten material? Does youtube deduct before paying you? Do you pay a flat rate? I'm not a youtuber. But have friends that have non musical channels. As I understand it. They can only use a few seconds of a published song.

Yes, youtube deducts the money to pay the licensing fees to copyright holders. They take care of everything. When you submit a cover they contact the publisher and arrange payment. They inform you that you will be “revenue sharing” with the copyright holder. I believe that most of the payment comes from Your share, not from youtube’s share. It’s still a great deal though. As near as I can figure, Youtube takes about 60% of the ad money and you get about 40%. If a song is under copyright you get about 20% to 25%. It’s hard to figure exactly when some of your songs are under copyright and some are not.

I've already left my opinions on the matter, on Facebook.

I'll just say it again, keep up the absolutely fantastic work and the results will flow.

Hi Doug,

You get paid when somebody clicks an advert, not for how long they watch, and it all depends on the demographic.

Like, if somebody from an LEDC clicks on an ad (or a VPN bot) you will only get like a couple of cents for that click. If somebody from a main country (MEDC) clicks the ad you will get much more, like somebody from the United Kingdom, United States you're looking at 50 cents for 1 click.

So over the course of time you get an average named "CPM". Cost per mile - This averages the amount per 1000 clicks. So if your CPM is £60, in 1000 ad clicks you'll have £60. 100 clicks £6 and so on, up and down.

I would use the term 3rd world country instead of "LEDC" but my old high school geography teachers said that coin of phrase isn't very politically correct anymore. Winking

Cheers Very Happy

Yes, I understand that the country the viewer is in has some bearing on how much you get paid.

As far as length of time a viewer watches an ad, I got my info from this marketing web site, discussing YouTube ads. Notice the third point listed.

That's fair enough, I never knew that. Definitely a benefit if true, I've been running on a CPM for years but unfortunately I've been demonetized because YouTube have moved the goal posts.

You now need 1000 subs and 400 watch hours from the previous year to qualify for ads. You guys will easily hit that benchmark.
