Years ago Goldtone and Paul Beard made these guitars. Anyone have one to sell? |

There were two models. One was actually made by Paul at the Beard shop in Maryland, so they carried the corresponding U.S. made Beard price.
The Gold Tone version was along the same lines as the Gold Tone/Beard resonators. Designed by Paul and includes his signature on the headstock, but built in China.
To aid you in your search, below is the official name of this Chinese-built flattop squareneck model is, if not exact, its close:
Gold Tone Paul Beard PBKG
I did a quick google search and the only listing for the Gold Tone version I could come up with is below. It is in of all places Madrid, Spain. And no clue if it's accurate or an obsolete listing. Or if it really is available, or that you'd even want to mess with it. But if the listing is current, it might be your best shot.
I played a few of these over the years and I thought they were very good bang for the buck. Kind of sorry I never bought one.
Joe, I don't recall right off if you are a member of www.resohangout.com but if I were you I would post a WTB thread on that site. Doesn't cost anything to join. Unless one of these guitars pops up here from a member I think you will have better luck on the hangout.
And someone there actually had one for sale in 2017. Who knows, maybe the purchaser of that guitar had their fill and might be ready to move on and sell it.

Rance White, of Lazy River Guitars, was talking about something like this a couple years ago. He's easy to deal with and builds a nice guitar for a decent price. _________________ RICK ABBOTT

Jim Adams does build a nice guitar (I have one of his resonators).
But Joe didn't mention his budget, only that he was looking for one of these Gold Tone/Beard squareneck flattops, and on the used market in recent years I've seen them for $400-$500.
Jim's version if the price is current on his website goes for $995 plus shipping so you're out well over $1000.
I was curious about Lazy River - he doesn't show any actual squareneck flattops on his site, but his regular flattops begin @ $1400 so I can't imagine that a squareneck version would be any lower.
Unless Joe tells us otherwise, we can make recommendations until the cows come home but if it's well beyond his budget then it's a moot point.
As much as I would like to have one of the Gold Tone/Beards, even a used clean example at ballpark $450, I didn't go for it in the past because I was thinking it just wouldn't get played often enough. And I already have too many guitars as it is crammed into my office/music room. _________________ Mark |

Thanks to all whom responded. Have had several offers from Forum members, etc. I'll probably settle for a used guitar. Hope I can find one close enough and be able to check it out. I'm still interested and still looking. Joe |

You can probably find an old Oahu student model hawaiian guitar that will fit your budget. Square neck, parlor guitar body, not to loud, but sound good with a sound hole pickup.

I started out on one of those old Oahu guitars.
Mine was a few steps up from the student model, I think it was made for the instructors.
When I got my 1st electric guitar it was gone but I located another one a few years ago.

Okay Joe, got it.
But I'm curious what you're looking for at this point - still the Gold Tone/Beard squareneck flattop, but at a cheaper price?
Or have you moved on to a different make of guitar? _________________ Mark |

Joe -
I recommend you snatch up Jerry Roller's Oahu model.
I purchased one off eBay a number of years ago and like it quite a bit. Easy to lay next to the couch and play around with during TV commercials!
These were the kind of 'dobro' many people started with during early 60's.
Plus, you could easily change strings and convert to an acoustic C6th. Good to practice six string C6th stuff with.
I think you'll be quite satisfied with tone of the older Oahu models.
Best of luck on your search. |
