Hello fellow steelers - I had been playing a "Nioma" lap steel on and off for about forty years, and eight months ago started on pedal steel (a mint condition Sierra Artist) thanks to encouragement and a lesson from Brett Lanier.
I tried Jim Dunlop, Ernie Ball, and generic aluminum bars in some different lengths and sizes. All these are now collecting dust thanks to my Clinesmith bar. It's so much easier to grip and lift, there is almost no string noise, and I love the tone. Being the klutz I am I've dropped it onto hard things numerous times and it doesn't dent or scratch. It's well worth the price.
Thanks, Todd for making this great product available! _________________ MSA Millennium SD-10 #22, Fender Steel King with Eminence EPS-15C speaker, Lehle Mono 90 Volume Pedal, Sarno Black Box, Baby Bloomer, Sarno Earth Drive, EHX Mel 9, EHX Small Stone, Mooer Chorus, Keeley Caverns, Clinesmith bar, Acri picks, Nioma lap steel, Regal resonator, and a whole bunch of other instruments. |

I tried multiple Dunlops, an Ernie Ball, and one made of aluminum (boo . . . ). My black Clinesmith 7/8 inch diameter, 3 & 3/8 inch length, 7.35+ ounce is my lifetime tone bar. Yes, the sustain is excellent and it's super quiet, but the ease of picking it up and the solid grip are outstanding. Another cool feature - I wanted a little more of a round radius on the heel end, and with Todd's coaching I made a rounder bevel by going from 400 to 800 to 1200 grit paper. Now if I could just get the bar to move magically like Lloyd Green! _________________ MSA Millennium SD-10 #22, Fender Steel King with Eminence EPS-15C speaker, Lehle Mono 90 Volume Pedal, Sarno Black Box, Baby Bloomer, Sarno Earth Drive, EHX Mel 9, EHX Small Stone, Mooer Chorus, Keeley Caverns, Clinesmith bar, Acri picks, Nioma lap steel, Regal resonator, and a whole bunch of other instruments. |

Should these bars be polished occasionally? Mine is showing a bit of wear, but it doesn't seem to affect the tone much. |

Yes by all means polish your Clinesmith bar. But only by hand and a couple microfiber clothes. No buffing wheels or handheld polishers. Something to do while your watching the game on a sunday afternoon. I polish all my polymer bars for about 20 minutes or so after each time i use one. I highly recommend the "Autosol Aluminium Polish", not their metal polish. You can find it all over ebay, amazon, walmart.com for about 10 dollars includes shipping. A little goes a long ways.
Just a good habit to get into, then your bar won't get like our friend Chase's

Never tried a polymer bar. How does the weight compare to steel bars? I equate the weight and mass of steel bars with tone and sustain. Apparently they (polymer bars) suffer no loss in those regards compared to steel |

Had mine for a year now. A 7/8" the same as the steel bars I've used for 40+ years.
This is now without doubt my favorite and I no longer even like using the steel bars.
I prefer the tone and the feel. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

My thoughts exactly, Andy. I’ve got steel bars everywhere, but I always use my Clinesmith polymer bars. I prefer them over all my other ones. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Hi Rick,
The only problem now is explaining to people why we call it a steel guitar?
I guess because playing a Polymer Guitar don't sound right.
Always had problems with hammer ons and pull offs. Still not great at it, but it's better with these polymer bars. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html
