20+ years ago I made the mistake of selling a Fender Deluxe 8. Saw this one on Reverb, made an offer that I didn’t think would be accepted, but lo and behold...
It’s in great condition. Was really dirty/grimy - I took it apart and cleaned, polished, lubricated... it was missing the blender pot, everything else is there and original. So I put a pot in there (I’ll need to hunt down a blender knob/wheel) and rewired it. The pots that were in there date to 1965. I’ve read on the forum that the black case with the logo started in 1968.
Anyway, it sounds great - now I just need to work on my playing! Trying to figure out what tuning to go with. I’ve used C13 (Junior Brown) as I’ve dabbled through the years, so that’s what I put on there for the time being. Thinking about trying A6...

Congrats! Looks beautiful!
I have to say I have rather enjoyed getting an old guitar covered in grime and the "reveal" of the beauty underneath after a good cleaning and polish. With certain types of instruments the "patina" should be left in place, but I think with steels they should usually be made beautiful again if they're in good condition like this one. |

Thanks Brad. Yeah, I enjoy the process as well. And I’m really pleased with how this cleaned up! |

That's really nice.
The patent number on the tuning pan also points to a late 60s model though I don't know exactly when that started. |

I’m a late-60s model myself, so glad I got something from the same era! |

A6/7 is also a viable choice. Junior Brown's tuning tuned down to A w/appropriately heavier string gauges. More balls & better "sweetspot center" for common keys. A great guitar if you just play one fixed tuning. |

With that case and tuners it’s about a ‘69... just like mine, but nicer! Fender/CBS bought a bunch of pots in ‘65, used them for the next several years... mine has ‘65 pots in it, with a pickup penciled with ‘69. Later models have the hexagon tuners, those are kidney-bean-shaped. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

I was under the impression that Junior Brown played C6 with high G. |
