Topic: BL705 a tight fit in a Carter |

I got a great deal on a nice BL705 re-issue (thanks Jerry). What a job to put it in! First the mounting plate was too wide to fit into the neck. I had to use a mill file to cut the ends of the mounting plate all but flush with the pickup. Once it was physically mounted it was like doing brain surgery to solder the connections in. While I had everything apart I took all the tuners off the keyhead and cleaned all of the gunk that builds up. Put it all back together and it sounds great. The trutone pickup sounded good but it was just a little too noisy. Plus I love the way a 705 looks in a steel. But what a job getting it in there!

Builders must mill out the pickup cavities to accomodate the pickup they are putting in the guitar. I had to file down the ends of the 710's I put in my Carter. Also had to elongate the mounting screw holes as they didn't line up.
I have a 712 that I bought to put in my Mullen SD12. It won't fit because of the mounting plate. Too long AND too wide. I have been filing on both the sides (flush with the pickup sides) and the ends, hoping I can still use the mounting holes.
I love and swear by BL pickups, but I will NEVER buy another one.

Mine wasn't quite that bad. A few strokes with a sharp file did the trick. I'm going to go on the lookout for a second one for the c6 neck. It does give the e9th neck a sweet growl.

I really like 705 pickups. I have them on both of my guitars.

Jim Palenscar had a bear of a time fitting a pair of the reissue 705’s in my ‘69 push pull. Worth the trouble, though and it sounds great.

I've swapped pickups on a number of steels and rarely does the new pickup just drop in perfectly. As someone already said, I've had to file the edges of the plate to get it to clear. I've had to enlarge the routed cavity. I've had to elongate and/or enlarge the mounting holes. I've had to drill and tap new holes on metal mounting plates because the original pickup holes didn't match at all. And the list goes on and on and...
