I recently found 3 sets of E9th SIT string that are at least 5 yrs. old in the back of my Music Junk Drawer. What do you think about Old New strings? I don't want to take the time to put them on if there gona be dead. Thanks _________________ 78 Emmons PP,Great tone.82 Emmons SKH #56 |

I've had good and bad luck with older strings. I found an old pack of cobra coils a while back and they had mostly rusted. I tried them anyway (the non rusted ones) and the 3rd broke way before it was close to being in tune. As long as the strings are stored properly then I don't see why they wouldn't be fine. I would be interested in knowing if there is a time limit when strings are no longer considered at top performance level (if stored properly) |

I use SIT Strings. When I purchase them I vacuum seal each set with a vacuum food storage machine.
No air (oxygen) and no moisture. They store really well, don't rust at all. _________________ '99 Zum D-10 9x8,

I would use them at home or at rehearsals; but, I don't believe I would depend on them for bandstand use.
FWIW, SIT strings now come in sealed packages. |

New SITs come in sealed packages.
I store them in ziplocks with those silicone things they put in packages to keep things dry.
SIT bulk packs come with silicone packs. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

Check the strings close for rust, If no visible rust, Pull them through a bit of 0000 steel wool, Several times to clean any corrosion or invisible rust and smooth them slick. If they have visible rust I would junk them. |

IF they were stored in a sealed bag with silica gel to prevent corrosion they may be fine. "Age" isn't really the issue - corrosion is.
Look at them through a magnifier. If you see small dark spots throw them in the recycle bin. _________________ No chops, but great tone

Got an order of 6 sets of SIT 12 Universal Stainless Wound on their way now. Will try some of the ideas on this post. I usually change strings about every 30 days. Keep spare set in seat with change date on them. That vacuum sealing is interesting to keep them in like new shape. Thanks guys. |

Lee stated he would not depend on them on the bandstand. While everyone has different taste I have tried about every brand on the market. To me SIT strings sound better on my steel, but that is my opinion. They do now come in a sealed package individually which is nice. |

I said that because of the age and unknown condition of the strings. I hope you didn't think I was knocking SIT strings.
I've been using GHS Boomers for years and now have two sets of SIT strings in my pack-a-seat for future string changes. I'm curious to see if there is a noticeable difference in sound and/or performance. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

To be more precise: The SIT sets I get now come with each string individually in a paper envelope (as before), but the whole set in a sealed package. I don't know how they come if you buy single strings (if you can). (The singles I get for 3rd, 5th, and 4th strings are not SIT.)
I'm dubious as to how much difference it makes between having sets in tight plastic packages with an envelope-type flap, either tucked in or not, or a literally sealed package. Does that much humidity get into the former, really? I order strings in big batches, for a price break, and have not found strings I got maybe 3 or 4 years previous, in unsealed plastic packages, to have any visible rust spots. |

I buy strings as I go along so I have never had issues. I could see where buying in bulk could. I wonder if steel guitar builders have any issues with strings since I would think they purchase in bulk. |

Brint - I recently purchased a couple of sets of SIT strings, as well as some SIT singles.
The sets are sealed in plastic sleeves.
The SIT singles I ordered (.011s and .017s) are each sealed in individual plastic sleeves. |

This is not really about SIT Strings.
New fresh strings are good and old strings can be not so good.
As several have stated you can tell by looking at them or wipe with a white cloth and see if they are corroded.
Fresh strings on a guitar sound better and work better. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

Bulk SIT strings have been mentioned here a couple of times. Are they available on the SIT site somewhere?
Also, a general question regarding all steel guitar strings - Is there any real difference between them and regular guitar strings? |

This post made me go looking through my string supply, I keep all my spare replacements in my seat. I found my 3rd. (.11) replacements strings, I had put the date of purchase on them. 5-9-7. So I better get me some new strings.
Well Whoo Pee the Mail Lady just delivered my new order of SIT Strings this morning. I ordered 6 new 3rds, (.11) Each string came sealed in a Plastic sleeve. On the sleve is a little seal. It says VIC (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) KEEPS YOUR STRINGS FRESH.
I also received my order for 6 Sets of SIT 12U Stainless Steel strings. One set was in the usual paper envelopes with the plastic tuck in flap package I had gotten previously. The other 5 sets are in plastic sealed envelopes inside a sealed outer package. Guess my supplier has strings in the new packaging.
If this proves out, Lay's SIT Strings has raised the bar on packaging strings to keep them fresh, rust and corrosion free. |
