I was playing with "the Collins Kid's" in the late 70's at Harris in lake Tahoe ca. We were playing the lounge and Merle Haggard & the Strangers were in the big headliner room. Larry & Lorie had met Merle when they were still "kid's" and did a show at San Quentin where Merle was their Trustee "roadie". Merle told Larry "I'm going to be a country singer when I get out of here" and he sure did! Merle was going to sit in with us and play some twin fiddle with Jim Shirey on the 1st night of the gig and the band was really excited about it. I was set up stage right and tight up behind the automatic half circle curtin so the ringside tables were the first thing I would see when the curtin went up as the show started. So there I am with Merle Haggard playing twin fiddle with us and as the curtin starts up, the entire Strangers band is sitting at the ringside table right in front of me!
When I saw Norm sitting there I almost dropped my bar!
We had a nice chat after the show.

Norm and I grew up in the same neck of the woods and have known him before he began his career with Haggard. He is and always been the most down-to-earth man you would ever hope to meet. He and I shared a radio program in 1961 along with Gene Breeden of recording studio fame.
It was in this time line Norm was working with a group in So/Cal on the weekends, and giving steel lessons to Barbara Mandrell. In 1962, I received a call from Norm to come over to listen to the new Texas Troubadours album with Buddy Charlton. Yes; he's been around the world and back, and I am "Stuck In Lodi Again." Hahahaha.
